Default is there such a thing as grade 8 nuts?

I don't know and some guy at OSH says all the nyloc nuts are the same, which means it has no grading?

I got a z51 rear spring, cause i like the way my old 85 z51 used to feel in the rear when cornering, after doing everything, z51 shocks, polys everyfreakin where, new ***** j's and s rack, 32's and 26's bars, it still felt"weak"

so to address this weakness, i am going the typical z51 rear rate, i hope it works, the front rate has gone up in my year car compared to the 85, and was matched up with other front rates, so I surmise the real issue is the rear....

I could leave the height alone, but after getting the 295x18 c5 zo6 rims combo 265x17, the rear relative to the front is too jacked up, so I want to drop it a little as much as i am against "lowering"

Of course Grade 8 nuts exist... What would be the point of having a Grade 8 fastener if you couldn't secure it with the equivalent nut? Grade 8 fasteners (bolts) have 6 radial lines on the head surface and the corresponding Grade 8 nuts used to have (prior to July 1999) six curved lines on their face. After July 1999 it seems that SAE switched the markings on the nuts to 2 curved lines and a dot. (Not sure why the switch, but there you go.)

Yes there is. As a fastner sales rep we have these in many stores. Tractor Supply has a nice selection.

not sure what the guy at OSH is talking about (not even sure what OSH is, either), but it's not an apples to apples comparison. while i agree nyloc nut may not have grade classifications, i'm pretty sure they should only be used in low strength/low temp applications

for standard hardware, there are grade classifications. as a rule of thumb, only use matching grade hardware. if mixing grades, the total assembly is only as strong as the weakest link, and ideally different grades shouldn't be mixed - torque itself as a locking mechanism may be compromised. personally, i would never use a grade 8 bolt with a grade 3 nut.

It depends on the size of the hardware the guy was taking about - usually stuff smaller than 1/4" will not be "graded".

There is tons of counterfit hardware out on today's market....there is are also tons and tons of differnet legit nut/bolt grade markings. Buy your "graded" hardware from a reputable source and you should be OK.

Generic basic Nut & Bolt Grading chart:

Oh yes "washers" can be graded as well.
