I just cranked it up in the driveway and this terrible grinding sound is coming from the middle. Oil changed every 3000 miles no matter what. Top quality synthetic and mobil1 filters. Past 7 years...
If the noise happends during cranking, it could be your flywheel/flexplate ring gear not meshing correctly with your starter gear. Loose starter or eaten gears. By the way, changing synthetic oil every 3000 miles is a waste of dinosaurs.

Not to hijack.. but lets say it's the starter..
Has ANYBODY actually checked the flywheel to starter pinion clearance on an install??
The FSM shows a .5 MM dia. wire tool but I can't see for the life of me how to get that thing between the ring gear and pinion gear???
TJM, to continue the hijack, most every starter comes with both a gauge and instructions on setting the clearance. OP, you gotta provide a better description about what is happening.

The hijack continues. OP will need to know anyway... Bonus!!
The bell housing encapsulates flywheel 360 degrees, as opposed to the old style.
You have to get the "tool" [ a 0.5 mm wire gage between the actuated solenoid [ which is another story altogether] and the flywheel teeth.
I laid on my back for two hours last week with about 12 bent up welding wires Failed to get the thing in there, at least with any confidence.
[ incompetence possible , here].
Finally was satisfied with the "Put chalk one the teeth " method....
Helper R&R'd three times before we got a good fit?
Very first step would be to pull the accessory belt and press the clutch in if it is a manual, thereby isolating the things turning to just the engine and starter. If it stops after the car starts - provided it will start - then it is the starter to flywheel engagement. If not, it is something internal.
