Novice tuner here...I want to be able to run datalogs on my '85 Corvette - stock. I've got the laptop and the software - just need the cables.
What is the difference between the Moates ALDU1 and CABL1 XtremeALDL combo (ie. what's the purpose of the XtrememALDL box between cables?) and the single ALDL USB interface cable that can be purchased from other suppliers. Are both setups compatable with the '85 OBD1? Why might somebody choose one vs. the other?
I not ready (yet!!) to start changing the settings in the ECU, and I don't want to mess up the current settings by plugging in anything that might do that.
I have the Moates XtremeALDL combo. While I'm not sure on everything the box does, it will allow you to switch between 10k resistance and open. Some cars require a resister between 2 pins on the aldl port to datalog. I had one of the cheap usb aldl cables you get off ebay but it never really worked right. To actually change settings you would have to remove the chip inside the ecm and replace it with one that has new settings burned in (unless of course you have an emulator of some sort). There's no chance of losing settings by just plugging in the cable.
Thanks Miatanut5,
That's basically the conclusion that I was coming to and your comments help confirm what I am thinking. The only thing I'm left pondering is if the '85, which I understand is a slightly different beast, will work with the aldl data logging software. Comments?
You might check with cumbercr, I think he's going to start on his '85 in a week or two. He'll be able to let you know if Tunerpro works on the older 160 baud ECM.
