it was an 89 with a black tag to begin with I swapped it to the automatic, since it was my daily driver in stop and go traffic, with mix feelings, the shop is not going to stand by the build, so it is going to be out of pocket,
I tried to sell it but could not, I have around 35k in the car...
I have a back up car now, should I
part it out?
put in a
zf6 6 speed, blue tag or, black tag? ( one reason it left in the first place was the box of rocks noise, I could not take, and the engine was internally balance making it unusable with the DM flywheel)
put in a doug nash 4+3 ( I had an 85 z51 when I was a kid and I like that trans even though the overdrive was broken for ever, it still ran)
or spring for a 5 speed kit
at this point I really don't give a chit, I just need it running cheap, and easy to do...
fixing the auto trans may be an option, but really I don't trust anyone with the results and to do it right is going to cost, and I can't risk it again.

Why not buy an uprated TCI/B&M trans for it , you will be buying from ppl that know the product and possibly have a good warrantee. Then keep it.
As to "fixing" it , depends what "blew" in the 700r4 , it's most likely bands and clutches due to an improperly set kickdown cable (which does kickdown AND line pressure)
What does the transmission do right now?

Fix the 700 R4, done correctly they are near bullet proof and they are not that expensive to fix. Cheaper then converting over to a manual transmission.

Google TRC trans in Chatsworth talk to Ron.
Good warranty can build up a nice one for you

Ask for Ed only (owner) he has a guy who will build you an unbreakable one, Ed can install it too. DOnt know about a warrant
Theres a thread in teh C3 sec about the new GM 6 spd auto....now that would be motivation to go back to an auto.
these are not that big a deal to rebuild. any competent shop can do the job, just get a warrenty in writing. have them put in a shiftkit while there at it. and the sun gear is probably cracked too. have it rebuilt with high performance parts not stock. and a better converter.

Also, the gears and how they were cut. Blue tags messed better and were a bit quieter. Black tags (earlier units) were stronger but with straighter cut gears.

Though it's probably been done before, you were the only person I've ever heard doing a ZF non-sprung clutch WITHOUT a DMF.
You needed one or the other. (sprung hub clutch or DMF)
I personally thought it was a huge mistake to give up on the ZF and go for the auto. (Of course, the use of an unsprung setup wasn't great either!) OTOH, only a driver can decide his/her preference.
Why do you think your auto failed? Did you ever have any vibration/problem after the A4 install?
Why would you go back to a manual when you were SO sure it sucked to sit in traffic with a stick?
If you'd have stuck with the ZF and a sprung hub clutch, you'd have been fine.
Spill it....what are you really thinking?

Reason: added phrase in parentheses
I flat bedded it to Ron's recommended shop today, they think it's not serious, but need to drop the pan.
at the time I tried like heck to get a sprung disc to clear the stock pressure plate after a few rounds of returns with summit I ran out of time, I threw the stock one back in and the throwout bearing that I stupidly sprayed with wd 40, greased up my disc in a few months and it slipped, making my experience with the zf6 way less then perfect.
I now have another daily driver that gets 29mpg sometimes, so the sitting int traffic with the vette does not happed so often anymore, with the smaller cam the take off would be closer to stock.
the driver you are speaking about did not know what he was getting into, hindsight is 20/20, the auto is good for picking the nose and driving, and i do alot of that, the stick shift is more fun but alot more work

.......... Dang ! ... You paid $3500 bucks for a 700R4 ??? ............
it was an eBay 700r4 at a cost of 1600, then my install garage said it was broken inside and he needed to rebuild it with his guy, i was stuck, he said it would not shift and the eBay guys says F you to me after a few big phone fights.
and my shop repaired it without a warranty getting screwed again and rearing it's fugley head last night.
the 3500 price included all the other BS to pull the zf6 out and adapt the A4 in it;s place, the swap was rigorous.... I got raped for 1000.00 extra at least
