It happened 3 times today in my '94 & scared the hell out of me!
The floor mat was bunched up & I fixed it, so I HOPE that is it. If it isn't fixed...anybody have an idea what it could be? I've eliminated the cruise control as the problem....
Worn TB shafts allow the vac to pull the butterflies off center so they hang up on the bores and won't return to closed position.
If a tap on the throttle returns engine to idle , you know what your problem is
It was fine today, after fixing the floor mat, until it REALLY warmed up. I almost turned a local Blockbuster store into a drive-thru
Tomorrow I get the TB checked out. He said it probably just needs cleaning...we'll see.
Thanks Guys!,
Tony
Its a good idea to clean the TB every few years anyway, even if you aren't having problems.. I pull mine and remove the Idle air control , then take some carb cleaner and a brush and scrub the thing out.. Better to do it before you have problems.....WW

Took her in today & he cleaned it with some "special cleaner", as he said carb cleaner was no good for it. He got black $hit out of it 4 or 5 times & let the cleaner sit for 5-10 minutes before wiping it out. It SEEMS OK, but, as usual, time will tell. FWIW, he is a mechanic I can truly trust & I stood next to him almost the whole time.
I'll keep you posted if the problem resurfaces & thanks for all the input!
What do you do when the throttle sticks open? You could test the tb itself. Leave the ignition switch off and rotate the tb full open and let return. See if it ever sticks. There should be a decent amount of retrun pressure on the spring.
It happend to me some years ago with my daily driver,it was a new roadster and to preserve original carpet there was a second carpet over the first...long story short ,for free times my accelarator pedal floored and i was over 7500 rpms... the second carpet was bunched under the pedal...

Wouldn't a bunched up carpet keep the pedal up, rather than depress it making the engine race?
It seems like it actually races, rather than maintains speed. The brakes will NOT lock up & stop it! I have to shift into neutral fast, or barrel into whatever is in front of me. I seems to do this quite often when I'mm pulling into a parking spot or my garage.

the pedal was stucked between the border of the carpet and the floor,it happend becouse it slipped forward, when i floored the pedal it engaged the border sticking in the wot position...3 times before i realy understand what was happening...no much time to think when your car is totally out of control...never heard that story about a guy that found a tortois crossing his road,he took it in the floor of his car and tortois got jammed under the brake pedal...

I'm going to try to check & pull back the additional floor mat whenever I get in & see if that indeed is the problem. The fact that is so intermittant has my mechanic thinking that is probably the issue.
God, I hope so! Thanks for your suggestions guys!
Obviously all the gas cable and pivot-link from pedal to throttle linkage have to be cecked,as guys here suggest, sticking TB blades for carbon build .disconnect TB duct and spray a can of brake cleaner inside your TB and wipe with a rag, inspect blades pivot pin, make a new return spring arrangment from gas link on the TB linkage, ceck the gas pedal pivot and cable assembly and spray WD-40 into the cable,no more options, pedal assembly or TB pivot-linkage ...
