As far as i know almost every C4 came with Bilstein shocks. If you've got the base suspension (soft ride), then the Z51 shocks are a cheap and very good option.
I also have a couple of questions about shocks. My 88 just turned 35K miles. When I hit a sharp bump in the middle of a corner the rear of the car will hop to the side. Is this normal for original shocks or are they worn out? Also, at the risk of getting beat up here, what shocks would give me a softer/smoother ride?
My experience with the sidestepping of the car in bumps in the middle of a corner relates to several things. Wheels, air pressure in the wheels, shocks and wheel alignment.
I switched from the original saw blades to C5 thinspokes while still having the old shocks and did notice an improvement in regards to sidestepping. Now with new shocks, but pending correction of wheel alignment, it's even a bit better and hopefully it will be gone with a corrected wheel alignment.
