I did one in a 88 and it was easy. You do not need to drop the tank. Pull the fuel door off and the rubber thing around the fuel neck and you can get to the whole sending unit and unbolt it. It is pretty easy.

I wouldn't use that filter you see in the pics, when it gets dirty it can collapse. I used the GM green screen type which stays open and rigid, your protected by the line filter as well. When I changed my pump, I had a simular "sock" and it was filthy and collapsing under pressure, once I changed it I had a new car again. Change the filter also.
