1986 smog pump bracket
You "can" weld aluminum with a MIG welder but you need pure Argon gas and a spool feeder at the gun end for aluminum welding wire. Probably just as easy (and cheaper) to take it to a welding shop.

of the smog pump bracket similar like the one at the rear.

My 1988 c4 does not have this front rod.
Why was this put on there?
Did all the c4 Corvettes had this front support bracket?
My 85 is cast iron.
What ever you have you would probably be better off taking it to a welding shop. Or probably cheaper, just find one here in the for sale section.
Cast iron is tricky to weld. It expands and contracts differently than regular steel when heated and cooled. If not done right the part will usually crack at the weld as it cools. If it doesn't there is a good chance it will down the road.
If it's aluminum and you don't have a tig or a spool gun it's a big aggravating waste of time. (been there, tried it with a mig
) A mig doesn't like to push the soft wire through the lead.

- put a magnet to it.on my 85, it's also cast iron, whereas my 90 is aluminum. not sure when the change over was, but I'd guess, it may be an iron head/aluminum head thing. as to the OP's 86, it would be interesting to know if he has an iron head or aluminum head L98, and if he has an aluminum or iron bracket.
