Sure its the switch, try a little brass brush on the lugs and a 22cal rifle bore brush on the connector holes then use dialectric grease on the contacts
It's the same switch as used for the door locks and both the switch contacts and the mating ones in the base become corroded and need a good cleaning.

Default Shift **** ****

Hmmm... My **** doesn't seem to be the same as your *****, but it also doesn't appear to be aftermarket ****.

Removing the cap on the shift ****, I look down into the middle and see two slots aligned left/right that seem to capture the center cup of the unit. No clip. And pull as I might, that **** isn't coming off...

Anybody else seen this? I'll try to get a picture so we can all be in awe of this lovely piece of ****.

FYI, my first post. My first 'vette. Engine, tranny and body are in great shape. Interior, not-so-much. Needs paint. So this is my project for awhile and the first mission is to replace all the window/door seals and passenger/driver window wipes. Then I can start on the headlight motors, the passenger window that won't roll, and a bunch of other little nuisance items that will just **** me off if I don't fix them...

I imagine you'll get tired of me in short order as I ask seemingly stupid questions.

Ah, yes, I picked up the full shop service manuals, owners, etc., so if anyone needs them, let me know...

And... WTH is up with all the staples used to hold **** together in door panels?!?! Good thing I only paid $3k for this, or I would have been very upset at the price-per-staple ratio.

If you have a manual transmission I believe the shifter **** unscrews.

staples? what staples????

My yr we got glue.

btw, welcome. never tire of helping someone thats willing to listen.

if your door panels are cracked, there is a good fix for that. Plastic welding. also adding wire mesh to the plastic. Stronger than new...

shift ****...if its auto, the buttom comes up..has a set of prongs that slide down onto the stem...under the button is a hollow shaft that DOES have a circlip...hard to see..harder to get clip-pliars on it to open it and remove.

Manual cars unscrew the **** like Cliff stated.

have fun!

btw, congrats on being sharp enough to get the FSM set BEFORE getting AFU in some project....thats a good sign !

Not to sound like a horn-tooter, but I've been in the service and repair industry for more than 35 years - electronics, computing, radio and related fields. Although I can 'wing-it' I will ALWAYS opt to have some service literature over... nothing. That also means that I've got a good idea of odd mechanical interfaces created by engineers that have never actually done field service.

I spent a freekin' HOUR studying that gear shift **** today. Lights, camera, magnifying glass - I'm tellin' ya, there's no clip in that hole. And when I look at the rod interface to the ****, it's as if they were forever intended to be one - I'll definitely get a picture and post it. In the mean time, I've lifted the cover and it appears we can disconnect the shifter arm from the mechanics and pull it out the top, in theory, we hope. ****.

Yeah, I'm going to have to look for some similar plastic - of course, the door panel has a break on the corner closest to the door latch, right by the window, in the 90-degree bend area -- missing piece. I can either buy a new door panel for $325, or see if I can get "creative". As for the staple ****, I found an alternative fix - Compression Rivets ( http://www.rivetsinstock.com/rivets/...ed-rivets.html ) to put that lovely inside window sweep back in "nicely". ****.

Thanks for the feedback - you gave me something to think about. Plastic welding and metal screen reinforcement.

BTW, the hot-glue that they used on the lower carpet - found a solution for cleanly removing that ****. Freeze spray (sometimes called "Component cooling spray") will chill that stuff down to below freezing. Then it will simply pop off the door panel with a flat blade. Awesome... No ****!
-----
As a follow-up: The shift **** on this vehicle, in fact, did NOT have a retainer ring on it. The only option turned out to be lifting the panel cover and pulling it over the ****, or to remove the lever itself from below. I don't get it...
