Just like to say. I dont recoment to any one to hit in any way the harmonic balancer. that is a "no no" all the way,
you can damage important part of your motor by doing this.
always use the proper tools.
You will find a long piece of wood and 3lb mallett in most mechanics toolkits. GM harmonic balancers of our vintage are either iron or mild steel and wood is not going to harm it.
ok after fighting all afternoon with i finaly took it out.
the HB was a mest very bad contion. tomorrow I will try to instal the new one after I fix the thread. I damege the tip just a little I think I can fix that.

Now that I see this I think I'll lift the engine out to do the cam change and head swap when I get to that point.
No need to remove the engine to do a cam swap. I did mine in an afternoon with the engine in place. You have to take at least one engine mount bolt out to lift the engine slightly so the cam will clear the crossmember above the steering rack.

you guys are compairing apples to oranges, the LT1 2 piece ballencer will require from time to time; a few taps to get the outer Ballencer off of the inner Hub. Never use this procedure on a single piece ballencer.
your both right and both wrong on this one...just saying
I'm doing a cam change right now and I did my balancer removing the exact same way Agent 86 did. In fact I'm almost convinced that is why that hard line has that bend in it like it does. I was even able to use my impact wrench to remove the balancer but my radiator was not in the way.

Another case of our cars being the same but different, my cam came right out with no interferance from that crossmember, It almost came completely out of the block before I had to move the condenser.
