Default ASR Problem?

Coming home last night, pulled up to a stop sign at a T intersection. Got on it a bit while turning, began to spin, no ASR interaction. Light didn't flash, didn't lose power. Stopped on road on the way home, tried launching car with ASR on, and off, ASR light does illuminate when I turned it off. Car spun both times, no intervention. Any ideas?

When you turn on the ignition, do all three ASR OFF, SERVICE ASR, and ASR ACTIVE lights illuminate for about 2 seconds, then turn off?

Are your tires the same size as the factory original tires?

Have you tried checking for stored DTC's?

I see ASR off, Service ASR, do not see ASR active, do see ABS active. I don't have a scanner to check for stored DTCs. I know the ASR worked not long ago, ASR active lite and power was cut to stop spinning.

ASR Active should be illuminated along with the rest when the bulb check is performed. It's quite possible you have a dead bulb in your Driver Information Center. Was the slip long enough to enable throttle intervention or rear wheel braking?

You don't need a scanner to check stored DTCs on these cars, they have on-board diagnostics capabilities quite similar to Cadillacs.

To read trouble codes, ground Pin 12 of the Data Link Connector (Pin 1 is the top left pin, bottom left pin is 9) below the steering wheel, and turn the ignition on. Your instrument cluster will read off codes automatically. There are 4 modules. After each module displays it's trouble codes, "- - -" appears, and the next module starts displaying codes (if there are any stored.)

Module 1 is the Central Control Module
Module 4 is the Powertrain Control Module
Module 9 is the ABS/ASR Computer
Module A is the SRS Airbag Computer

Attached is the functional check of the ABS/ASR system from the Factory Service Manual.

Hope this helps,
Nick

Thanks Nick, I'll check this out as soon as I get a chance. I really need to scrounge up the money to buy a FSM. I've tried launching the car from a stop in the past, and the ASR intervened just about instantly. Now there's no difference whether it's on or off. Just reading the chart you've attached, I get alll the way to system is funcional and free of faults, but I well continue to check it out.

A FSM is definitely a must with these cars. Even a subscription to ALLDATADIY can help out, but doesn't have ALL of the info that the FSM has. eBay is definitely your friend when looking for these older Service Manuals.

According to the diagnostic chart, if your "ASR Active" light is not illuminating during the bulb check, you've got a problem somewhere, whether it's electronic or just a burnt bulb.

I have ALLDATA, but cannot find the "ABS/ASR Symptom Table." I will look up a 1993 or 1995 and see if I can get the symptom table for you.

According to the 1993 and 1995 FSMs, there are a few conditions which will prevent the ASR Active light from illuminating during the bulb check.

-DTC 57: "Cruise Control Output Monitoring Fault"
-Stuck Contacts in Cruise Control Cutoff Relay
-Indicator Circuit Issue
-Defective Bulb

Thanks for all the info Nick. It's dark, and no garage here, so this will have to wait. I've got a local Vette dealer, it's who I bought the car from, so usually between them, and a local service center that does all their Vette work I can get it taken care of, but would rather try doing some of it on my own, much cheaper that way plus I learn more about my car. I just bought it around Thanksgiving last year, and it's my first Vette.

No problem!

That's one of the great things about these cars. As old as these cars are, they're so complex that it's impossible to know everything about them... There's always room to learn more about them.

By doing some researching a little bit at a time (with each issue you have), you can begin to make a mental map of where each component is in a system, what it actually does, how the individual parts interact with each other, and how the system as a whole interacts with and effects other systems in the car.

These cars aren't just motors bolted to chassis anymore... It's impossible to diagnose problems (especially electrical problems) without knowing what everything does and how they're connected. You'd be blindly replacing parts until you were broke...

Having that knowledge also puts you a step above the rest when you do decide to have your vehicle serviced at a shop. It also helps you help others at places like this!

Good Luck, and let us know what you find!

Had to get the lawn mowed today, there's a chance of rain here every day until Thursday, It's about 12:30pm now, start work at 4:00pm. I'm hoping to get out there one day soon and explore this issue further. Thanks for the help Nick, that's what makes forums like this so great. I've been lucky, my Nissan Titan forum is great too.

Haven't had a chance to troubleshoot, but the problem seems to have fixed itself, I'm guessing bad/intermittend connection. I've got a FSM on the way, so if it acts up again I'll have that to consult.
