New AC Delco alternators use to come with a sheet inside that told you to charge the battery before installing the new unit or diodes could be blown.. Its been quite a few years since I purchased a new alternator, but I believe it had something to do with a surge if the battery was low......WW
Here is what i have done today rebuilt alt from new source, new pigtail, new battery. Start car same problem 11.8 at fast ilde on three different gauges all reading same ,once warm it goes to 11.4.
Will go and see what readings i get at the above mentioned places.

Thanks to 94z07fx3 the single red wire was corrode at the terminal and i did not see it till i cut the boot off as it had hardened up. If it wasn't raining i would be out for a ride

So you're saying after all this, it was the power wire on the back of the alt? I don't have that boot, I have a plastic cover that "snaps" over the lug that you have to remove to expose the wire when you take it off. I would think you'd have to pull that boot back to un-do the nut and you would've seen that. Oh well, it's hard not being there to see for ourselves.
