I have seen quite a few people posting replies stating that they have replaced their harmonic balancer on the L98 motors due to seperating and misaligned timing marks. What I need to know is how you tell if your pully has slipped. When I purchased my 88 out of a field, it was set at 2 deg. I adjusted it to 6 deg but it runs a little rough.
If it throws belts that is a dead giveaway. With the belt removed the outer and inner piece should feel like a single unit instead of two parts joined by a rubber middle.
AS A TEST ONLY
Verify the PCV valve rattles then plug off every vacuum orifice on the intake and see if idle improves in roughness but don't drive the car w/o power brake assist and kill yourself or your neighbor's toothless parrot.

Or.... you can make one from an old spark plug.
Gut the plug, clip the electrode, and find a bolt that will thread inside the plug body.
Grind the end of the bolt so its round and wont ding the piston top.
Without a degree wheel you can mark the pulley in both directions, then measure the distant between the two marks. Divide by two, or half the distance between the two marks is TDC.
Either of the above will work. If you are into tearing things down, you can always pull the left cylinder head and use a dial indicator gauge to determine tdc on cylinder #1.
I didn't want to tear it down again, the old spark plug sounds easy enough though. Already did the vaccum test. The idle isn't very rough, just enough so you can feel a little vibration.
