Default BBK Sticking Throttlebody

I installed a BBK 52mm throttlebody on my 1986 automatic. I just changed all emission parts, fuel injectors, FPR, IAC, etc. My problem is that the car idles 200 rpm more than its supposed to. I set the TPS and Idle 5 times, its fine. If I tap the gas pedal it returns to normal or if I tap it back at the throttlebody. I have even tried a return spring...doesn't help. The only thing I notice is that when the car is off and warm or cold I can't get it to stick only when its running.

any help would be appreciated.....

My throttle body will stick if the 4 bolts are not tightened evenly or overtightened. If that is ok, back off on the idle setscrew a half turn.

Is there a torq setting for the four bolts? The return tab doesn't touch the idle set screw unless I tap the gas.

I am thinking of just giving up on this BBK. Does anyone know who would rebuild and bore my stock throttle body?? I am tired of aftermarket stuff!!!!!

Was it new?
What you are describing is consistent with a TB that has worn shafts and the butterflies can be pulled off center
and bind up on the bore under vac ( while engine running )

There are several vendors on eBay that rebuild TB and will bore them to 52mm at the same time

If you have the wrong throttle body for your application, you will encounter this issue.

Ask me how I know!

Check with BBK. Over the phone will be much more productive than trading emails.

Good luck!

Check the travel on the tps, I seem to remember someone having the same trouble and the tps tang was barely hitting the throttle body casting. FWIW my BBK has worked flawlessly since I got it.

Disconnect the throttle cable. Does the tab hit the stopscrew? If it does, your cable if keeping the blades open. Bend the bracket or elongate the bracket mounting holes. If the tab still doesn't hit the stopscrew maybe there is a burr or something keeping the blades from closing.

Even if the TB works fine with the car off? I was thinking some kind of vacuum problem. Even with a helper spring the same thing. I bought about 20 springs to try.

thanks.

Refer post # 5.
Maybe it is a manufacturing defect?

I think you are correct because I tried everything. I cleaned, lubed, TPS and Idle. I am leaning towards defect also or the blades are off center. I already dropped off my old TB to be bored and rebuilt.

thanks again....

What a coincidence.. I just purchased a brand new BBK 52mm as well.. same damn issue..

I'm so frustrated. Waited 3 weeks for this part.

Gonna have to get in touch with BBK on Monday. Unfortunately my old TB is in pieces, I had planned on re-boring it out, but the original shaft is bent and i just spent $400 on a doorstop.

Funny thing, I was going to purchase a Performance Products TB, and got sucked into getting the 'better' BBK. I have read so many places about people having this issue.

I highly doubt that BBK is making this stuff in the US. Probably getting imported from China.

You don't need your core. There are plenty of places online that will send you a rebuilt TB. If you have the core you will get around $50 for it. I had mine rebuilt and bored for about $225 with gaskets. The BBK looks cooler but; it has problems. The rebuilt TB works perfectly. I am starting to believe rebuilt is better than aftermarket. I can't send my BBK back. I bought in January while I was gathering all my parts. Send me message and I can give you the shop that did mine. I am very happy with the work.

good luck

Yes I did but; because I bought the TB right after Christmas I was out of time for a refund. I could have sent it back to have it rebuilt but; not for free. I explained that it sat in the box until this month. They didn't care. I could have persued it more. At that moment I didn't care, I just wanted my vette back. The new designed BBK is giving alot of people trouble. Maybe you have the older model that looked like a stock TB. I also have a friend with the same problem on a camaro. He was lucky to get a refund. Good and bad experiences with all parts. All I know is that I have a new BBK ashtray.......

That is BS. That is the problem with manufacturers now they could give a rats a$$ about customers. If I were BBK I would at least want to look at it. They should be able to tell if it is a manufacturing problem or not. Thats for letting me know never to buy BBK anything.

I agree! Between this and the TPI manifoild they never finished I won't be giving them any more of my money. rrt898, yes I do have the old style throttle body. I'd keep pestering them about it, time should not be a factor on a brand new piece that was never installed. If you get enough negative response in this thread I would send them a link to it.
