DO NOT buy from any chain based parts sotres. Find an old school shop that repairs alts/starters. Ask them to rebuild yours or suggestion for a better replacement.
CS130 or CS144?
I was searching google and reading stuff saying the 144 is the solution to "hopeless l98 alternators". Lots of people that replaced them lots of times say it. Is that only valid for the original delco ones? is the CS130 from powermaster more heavy duty?

I've had a PepBoys Lifetime Replacement Alternator on mine since the original went **** up in 1995. I've had it replaced 2 times since then...and all those are mostly due to excessive revs for the alternator. High RPM extended runs at the track without underdrive pulleys will cause the bearings to go.
Only on the last one did it go beyond the bearing. It flagged an alternator light, and when I took it off there were bits of brushes and stuff falling out of it.
I just turned 85k miles...for the abuse I give it, I guess I can't complain. I'm averaging about 20k miles per alternator.
I can say that if you can find a good shop who can get the case machined for oversized bearings for you, then you are in fat city. That is the highest failure point on the L98 alternators. Better, oversized bearings will reduce that significantly.
