It does however remove about 20-25 lbs...
red90sixspeed, I checked the weight of the AIR pump on my 87 and it only weighs 4.5 lbs. What else did you remove to lose 20 lbs.?

jtjerry, by the way the A.I.R. pulley is shaped on the inside, I doubt it can be used for a homemade kit. I will be doing a homemade version regardless so give me a couple weeks and I'll post the part # for the pulley I use.

Does the removal of this pump set any codes in the ECM? Just wondering... Chris

WAR MACHINE
if you done something that will work I think there will be more people interested with that mod, not only me.
By the way, when I removed my AIR, that weights no more than 5 lbs.
So where is that 25 lbs., ha?
MAXX- I glutted my AIR inside (broke that two wings inside pump) so AIR do not work. I removed all hoses too. Looks much better. No any codes, no any negative effect. Really clear look of engine compartment.
Now I must only cut that small metal pipes that comes to exhaust manifolds: that pipes make really unnecessary large amount heat. :smash:

When I removed mine I put everything in a box and weighed it. Bolts, nuts, the drain/vent tube that runs under the throttle body, the diverter valve, tubes etc etc. My air pump alone weighed 6 lbs. Maybe the laws of physics are different in Tennessee but the box weighed about 22 lbs. But like I said before, anyone that would pay upwards of $40 to $50 for the air foil or $65 to $70 for a K&N air filter shouldnt have a problem forking over $155 for A.P. ELIM. Or how about them catback exhausts that supposedly add 25 35 hp that everyone pays $500 for? My total exhaust system cost me less than that including headers and installation.

WOW
Ok. I think that the laws of physics are the same in Poland. :D
I done the same (not only buy breathless AIR eliminator). So it looks that I save 22 lbs - 6 lbs AIR pump = 16lbs for free ($0) . So that kit for $160 remove only 6 lbs. :smash:
It truly remove maybe only 2 lbs cause as I remember law of physics that eliminator must weight something. So all another 80% of claimed by breathless weight saving you could made without their kit yourself for zero costs. I do not need $160 breathless AIR eliminator kit for removing that 18 lbs. So their advertising is simple bullpoopie :bs and give some light about that company at all :U

I do not see nothing wrong if breathless will sell AIR pump claim that theit $160 AIR Eliminator clear engine compartment and save 6 lbs (hahahahahahaha :) ) weight from car. But they telling simple :bs :bs :bs :bs

Please bear with me. It will be a week or 2 before I get to the homemade bracket. I'm waiting on other parts right now. As soon as I get the right pulley I will post it here. We have discussed this before but got "0" help from those who paid for this overpriced piece.

 Thanks, that's what I wanted to know! How much did the new bracket weigh?

War, I knew I was walking into that one. I didnt weigh it  . I'd guess it weighs about 3lbs or so? I've been trying to lighten my car a little bit at a time, everywhere I can. You know the old saying, if you cant find 50 hp in one place, find 5 hp in 10 places. Theres ALOT of weight to be saved in the exhaust alone. At any rate, all I'm saying is that this mod was worth it to me, especially in light if what other mods cost. I (unfortunatly) dont have the $$$ to throw around to try everything out there. IMO this was a worthwhile mod for the reasons mentioned above...cheap, easy and asthetic value ;) If you can do it yourself for little or next to nothing then  to you.

I hear ya on the weight loss. I'm in the process of that myself and have it down to 3150 w/o driver. I'm going to loose the pre-cats and maybe the main cat too. I'm looking to loose all the A.I.R. stuff as well. One thing I also would like to do is get a 50/50 weight ratio along with losing weight. Sounds good to hear that the new pully was light. That will help attain that ratio. I need as much help as I can get b/c I'm adding a debris screen for the radiator and a tranny cooler. I just wish carbon fiber wasn't so doggone expensive. I'd fab up as much weight loss I could make.

Like I said, I made mine out of 3/4 X 1 bar stock, 6 rib- pulley, moved it closer to the water pump, about 6 1/2 shorter belt stable. I have all the specs for it and I have some pics if anyone wants to see it. I tigged it all together, threaded the bar stock for the pulley bolt cut the spacers and put it together. Took about 2 hours to build and about $40 in parts, pulley being the most expensive part. Gets a little close on the MiniRam Tstat housing, but when I built it, wasn't thinking about a miniram and there is not a problem with the TPI.

Email me and I'll send you the pics. If someone will give me the method of posting pics, I'll do that. While you're at it, install oil coolers without heating your incoming radiator air.

Lexdog,

I live in PA and we have yearly inspections. Will removing the AIR pump mess up anything I need to pass inspection? What does the AIR pump do anyway?

I do believe removing the airpump will increase your emissions. Your cats do two things. One is to remove NOxs. This is the stuff that creates smog and can cause lung damage. Your cats has scrubbers that absorb the NOxs. Now the 2nd stage of your cats is to burn off any CO.. carbon monoxide. This stuff will kill you if you breath it. So, the only way to burn something is to oxidize it. Since the CO is in your exhaust stream there isn't any left over O2 or air to burn it in the cats so your air pump adds air to your Cats so it can burn off the CO.

CO + O2 ---> CO2 (now we can all breath easier)

There ya have it!

When you run an engine lean there is a lot of incomplete combustion. This produces a lot of CO and this is why your engine runs hotter and melts pistons if you run lean.

Hot combustion cambers also produce more NOxs. If your engine is tuned then it should have low CO and NOx's without cats, some people pass without cats which amazes me sometimes.
