Default 96 flywheel issue

Hello, I'm a C3 guy, but my neighbor's son died, and he had a 96 collector edition with a 6 sp and he was in the middle of a clutch job when he passed, so I'm trying to help her she knows nothing about cars. We towed the car to a trans shop. They are saying the flywheel is a two piece flywheel and can't be turned, and a new one is $800!!!

Is this true? Isn't there an aftermarket aluminum one, what are my options. Trying to prevent my neighbor from getting ripped off.

Yes. True that the flywheel shouldn't be turned. You can either reuse the old dual mass flywheel or buy a conventional flywheel from Spec Clutches. Don't think there are any dual mass flywheels available any more. Be sure to get the correct throwout bearing for later model blue tag transmission. It has a white plastic sleeve in it. You can get parts from here

My recommendation is buy a throwout bearing and flywheel from powertorque. Then buy a clutch kit for a 96 camaro from Autozone, Advance, Oreilleys etc. Toss the camaro throwout bearing and use the correct corvette throwout bearing from powertorque.

I've run this combo on two different corvettes and its great for a driver.

...and do a search on "single mass flywheels" so that you are prepared for the corresponding gear rattle.

Unless there are signs of leakage from the dual mass flywheel (it'll look like black grease/lube leaking from it), I'd clean it up with a scotch brite pad and reinstall it. In addition, there is a very simple test in the Factory Service Manual that the shop can perform to ensure the internal springs are ok.
