Default Passive Keyless Entry light on

When I took my 1996 out of storage and re-attached the battery cable, the Passive Keyless Entry light came on and will not go off.

Any body has any idea what could be wrong?

Thanks

Have you tried disconnecting the battery and charging it up?

I'm interested in this topic as well - I looked at a 95 yesterday and the light is constantly on when driving. When you shut the car off, it stays on... .and then you simply put the key back in the ignition and remove it and the light goes out.

When you say "disconnect the battery and charge it", do you mean charge the battery out of the car?

The 95 I looked at had a new battery. And he did not have any fobs for it.

I have a 1996 and the passive key light comes on sometimes and stays on, then I drive sometimes and it is off. I replaced the key fob battery and tried to program it to no avail. If I don't make sure it's off when I get out, it runs down the battery. There have been some posts about a possible driver door switch but he door ajar light seems to be working fine. Should I try buying a new fob? I also don't even know how to use the security system. I have heard you use the key to lock the passenger door? Anyway, I am a 1st time Vette owner and want to keep the car and drive it, but I am nervous about the battery being run down or some other problems that may occur due to the PKE. Any help would be appreciated as I hope to learn as much as I can. Thanks so much!

The PKE light should not stay on. If it is there is a problem. (This is different than the security light, they are two different things) First, check the PKE fuses. 26, 40 and 42. If the fuses are all OK I would try programming the PKE system and see what happens, this should give some feedback about where the problem is. You should be able to follow the instructions all the way to where it says to bring your fob into range. If it doesn't work, and you you report back with details about exactly what you did in each step and what the car did there is a chance we can help you. If you report back that "it didn't work", then there isn't a chance.

The instructions for programming the PKE fobs is in the owners manual. If you don't have an owners manual, here is a PDF version:

http://gmpartshouse.com/downloads/ma...95corvette.pdf

You don't lock the pass. door with the key (unless you want to). Details about how the system works are also in the owners manual.

Please do not run out and buy a fob unless your problems have been resolved and you can do the fob programming procedure the way the book says it should work. They are very expensive.

I'm in a similar situation. I just bought a 96 a few days ago. It came with NO key fobs. I had been driving it for about four days when the PKE light came on. It wouldn't turn off until I inserted the key. I drove it home and the light didn't come back on. I Guess I'm going to drive it a bit more and see what happens. I really have NO interest in purchasing a key fob as I'm not a big fan of this system.

This is probably a stupid question, but could another frequency/interference trigger it?

I plan on adding an aftermarket alarm, would that negate this issue if it returns?

Another interesting thing I found out today....VATS had been turned off. I just had it tuned using LT1 Edit at a local speed shop. The guy who did the tune informed me of said VATS situation.

Possible but very unlikely

If anything I would think having two alarm systems competing would complicate things. Do a search on aftermarket alarms and come to your ow conclusions about how well they co-exist. Of course, sometimes it works out fine, othertimes...

I have tried to reprogram keyless entry according to the manual.
1 I took transmitter out of range
2 hit trip odo twice
3 held fuel info and light did not come on? I stopped there

I then brought transmitter back in range and passive key light came on. I turned ignition off took key out, still on. Reinserted key, took it out, light went off.
Any ideas???? Key fob has a new battery

Most likely your PKE receiver is not working. I'm afraid that's not an easy fix. Although someone recently posted that they replaced the PKE unit by themslves in an afternoon.

But just in case:
1. I wouldn't worry about driving it, just make sure the light is off.
2. Have you checked all of the fuses involved? 26, 40 and 42, I think.
3. Seems like a silly question, but do your trip and fuel buttons work OK normally?

See my post #8 in this thread to learn how to pull codes from the PKE, note that the procedure shown is for a 93, newer cars will be different because the ALDL connector changed in 94. Consult the Factory Service Manual for the correct pins to connect for displaying error codes.

The PKE in my '94 whent wacky on me last week. Symptoms include.
The doors stopped locking when I walk away from the car but the fob button will still unlatch the rear hatch.
One day last week the the rear hatch latch started un-latching every few seconds.
Last night the PKE light was on while driving for about 40 minutes. It went out when I shut the car off.
This morning, at the gas station, the car locked itself even though I have the battery out of the fob.

I'll try to get time to do some trouble shooting this weekend and let y'all know what I find.

Default Keyless Remote

I finally got my 96 fob programed. The light wasn't coming on. When I tapped it with my finger it came on and I was able to program the remote. The problem now is when I walk near the car the doors unlock and relock continusly until I open the door. After getting inside and closing the door they again unlock and lock continusly until I insert the key in the ignition. Is the the way it's supposed to work? If I leave the remote anywhere near the car the doors lock and unlock continusly. Anyone know a fix for this?

My suggestion would be to contact Bree Miller, see this post for the contact info.

I had a second fob that acted similar to yours, she was able to fix it at a reasonable price.

Hello,
Have you resolved this problem?

I'm asking because I have the same symptoms ( when insert the key into the ignition and turn into position "on" the PKE light comes up like othet lights on DIC display, but stay constant (also if I start the ignition/engine). Even if I turn off the engine and take the key out of the ignition the PKE light remains on, but if I put back the key into ignition the PKE light disappears. The programming procedure still does not work for me (TRIP ODO and FUEL INFO)) so I'm thinking of replacing the PKE module with another one (also used).

Having similar issue on my 96. PKE was replaced and programmed last year and worked as expected for a year.
One day last week while driving, the PKE lamp came ON until I turned the ignition OFF and the lamp went out.
After that, the PKE will NOT go into programming mode, the system does NOT work, but the FOB will open the hatch, but not the doors, the TRIP/ODO and FUEL INFO buttons work, the fuses are fine and the FOB has a good battery.

UPDATED: I just spent my lunch half hour dinking with it and found the trick was to hit the TRIP 2x slow, but NOT hold it for the 5 seconds it says to in the other link.

Follow these OEM instructions and it will work every time:

(And yes, I have used the SEARCH and so far, this is the most in-depth thread on the issue that I have found.)

I have not been able to fix mine. I have three modules and don't believe that all three are bad. I only have one fob and really don't want to dump 250$ in one not knowing. The unique thing about mine is that I can be adjusting my seat and the PKe light will come on a stay on even after shutting car down and removing the key. The light will go off when I reinsert the key into the ignition switch. I have searched the wire diagram is FSM and cannot find the link. ⁉️😕😵

Whoa! Kentucky Gremlins?
I wouldn't suspect the seat, but possibly the control switch. Sometimes you can kill a Gremlin by stomping it into the GROUND.
If you've been that deep into it already, maybe try a known good chassis GND on a lead with and alligator (or probe) and try grounding the console frame and retest, then the dash frame and retest, etc. and see if the symptom changes.
Keep us posted! If one person has had this issue, chances are there are others.
