Alternator wiring

It has 2 wires in it, a long thinner one with a boot, and a short thicker one that's just the wire.
I followed the wire on my corvette (Which by the way is thicker than this new one, shouldn't thicker wires be better for higher amp-age? Do I really need to change it?) and from what I see, changing this wire will not be "painless" at all. It goes in really tight spaces and I have really big hands.
Should I really put the new thinner wire in?
Also, what wires exactly do I need to change on my vette, just that 1 wire that goes from the alt to something (don't know what that is) behind the battery?
