Was working fine, but then today I pushed the button to open the hatch and nothing. I can hear a faint click in the back (i assume it's the solenoid) but the latch isn't releasing.
3 things...
1. Ideas of how to open it without tearing things up...
2. I assume the lock itself went bad or the solenoid is weak.
3. Know of any good guides/videos on how to open/fix it?
Fred, crawl into your hatch from inside and look for a wire hanging near the hatch lock, must be somewhere there, pull it , voilá ! hatch open again and inspect for bad solenoid or other malfunction, let us know !
The wire does not have the ring but this gets you the idea :

The solenoid on my 96 would work sometimes then just stopped working at all. The solenoid is not easy to find or cheap. I lucked out and found a used one on fleabay for around $25. Changing it out is pretty easy just take off the trim piece across the back that covers the latch and the solenoid is right there.
The click is likely the hatch release relay. It's back by the solenoid.
Take the trim off, locate the relay. Verify that when you hit the
hatch release button, it gives a pulse of 12V to the black wire.
Then measure the resistance between the two terminals of the solenoid.
It should be a pretty low number (a few Ohms max.)
