What ever you do dont buy an ebay Cam. I did and ended up with a big paperweight for an engine.

Interesting...so can you educate me? Looks like the 87 and 90-91 cams are more similar, yet not identical and the 88-89 is a bit of an outlier in terms of specs. Is one of these preferable over another? Do we know why GM made these changes?

Just currious.

Thanks,

Dave

Sorry to wake up this old thread...but I find it's information very useful. I have an 88' L98 and was looking to upgrade to this cam... http://www.summitracing.com/parts/na...7395/overview/

My purpose for the upgrade is to add a little more aggressiveness to the sound of the engine and not for track purposes. How much of an upgrade is this cam and what would the advantages or disadvantages be? Would I need to make any more changes or upgrade anything else as a result of this new cam? Thanks for all your help.

Comp cam 08-501-8 will have a smooth idle and run on stock programming. Custom programming can help, but it is a good upgrade.

I chose this cam after I called Summit and asked for a cam that would provide 25-30HP. It sounds great and required no chip. It is weird I must say because it seems the computer needs some adjustment time if I go from a long drive on the freeway back to city driving. Nothing drastic only noticeably at idle. After about 10 minutes everything is normal. I strongly suggest you remove that exhaust system if you want to really get the sound you are looking for along with this terribly under rated cam. For the amount of money needed to go outside the ability of this 1908's computer I am shocked this cam is NEVER mentioned. I improved the air intake, roller rocker arms, and exhaust. I have yet to get this engine RPM over 4000 as I was 145mph and climbing steady. I am a small fry compared to all these big budget builds I read about. My HP is only around 330 at the crank but I totally changed this lame L98 to more like a stock LT-1 but better. I only wish that I had bought a 1990 6 speed and done all this engine work to that year car. No matter it is a fun fun car to drive. When I pull up at a Corvette club meeting the cam and exhaust ALWAYS get compliments.

I loaded that cam's specs into my desktop dyno sim 5.
I"m curious have any of you guys dynod the cars?
Looks like it puts the car around 265 horsepower at the crank at 3400 rpm
and a little under 400 ft lbs starting at 1500 rpm.. peak looking like about 410 2k rpm then falling back to 400 till about 2500. On an otherwise stock L98.

I bet that cam is a real giggle fest at stop lights with all that monster torque.

When I built my engine last year I got an LT-4 replica cam from Scoggin-Dickey. It works great, idles nicely and runs like a stocker - as would be expected since it is a stock cam for a 1996 LT-4, just a little bigger than the L-98 cam. You get .480 lift with 1.5 rockers and the duration is 204/211 @ .050 as I recall on a 115 lobe separation. Also, it was only $235. You can use stock LT-4 valve springs with it as well.

Call them at 800-456-0211 - ask for part number SD1142

I've never dyno tested my car. But before my rebuild my 1988 C4 could not beat a Toyota Camry ! Talk about embarrassing man. Well today I eat most Mustang GT's rather easily. New ones not old ones.

So I take it that the Comp Cam 08-501-8 is far better than the GM Performance cam above? Thx for all the great info guys!

Yes, the 501 will create more power than the LT4. While they both have close to the same lift, the LT4 is done using a 1.6 rocker to get to .480. The 501 has more duration at 212 / 218, and because it has a tighter LSA at 112 it will create more power is a shorter powerband than the LT4's 115. All in all, the 501 compliments the rpm range of the TPI intake very well.

I am very very happy with this cam ! I made mods to the air intake, Edelbrock 3860, SLP ported gasket matched runners and true dual 2.5" exhaust. Some other mods but those 3 made the biggest difference in overall gains from the lame stock L98. I have to say my 2:73 gears are what keep me from being able to turn my tires into grease. Depending on what surface I'm on I rip tires and start spinning from left to right before it just rockets straight ahead. If I am on a rough surface it just goes straight ahead without ripping tire. I think allot of the credit goes to the 08-501-8 cam.

Hello I know this is a very old post but I thought I would try to see if anyone would answer. I decided to go with the Comp Cams 08-501-08. Can you tell me what Spring kit and Rocket arms set up you went with? There are so many option and a little bit overwhelming to decide with what set up to go with. Thanks Sam
