I just bought a '91 base model car. It is very low mileage and in excellent condition but the volume control on the radio does not work. The radio comes on and the antena goes up. I can hear the sound but it is very quiet and when I try to adjust the volume nothing happens. Anybody know what is causing this and how difficult a fix it is?
The 19991 radio consists of 3 groups. The radio control head is in the console and has the ***** and buttons. The actual radio electronics are under the dash on the passenger side, near the end of the dash. Each speaker has its own amplifier. Most likely your problem is in the radio control head or the radio electronics (called the ECM). If a speaker amp is bad you generally get a bunch of static or nothing from the speaker.
Contact Dr Don. He is the radio guru. You can google him.
I solved all my bose radio problems by switching to a 95 Camaro radio. Dr. Don makes a pig tail connector that will allow you to use your existing speakers and with the new radio and pig tail, it's a plug and play installation. The Camaro radio seems to have more power as the radio plays louder, and it also has a CD player. I got the radio for $125 and the pig tail for around $10, if I remember correctly.

the Camaro radio swap I believe is for 89-earlier cars..
I also agree Dr Don is the way to go, I have seen Bose Amps go bad and have also seen the Radio control module under the dash go bad as well.
Thanks to everyone for your help. I contacted Dr Don and he is very good. He said the radio module power supply needs to be rebuilt and quoted me a very good price to do it and offered to walk me through removal of the unit. I was impressed.
