When I bought my car the cags didn't work, this is good but I realized that neither do the reverse lights. I looked at the connector for the trans and it is just unplugged. If I were to buy the skip shift eliminator would my reverse lights work again? thanks.
I don't believe just unplugging the cags at the tranny has anything to do with the back up lights, if you do, plug it back in and see if they work. The skip a shift eliminator is just a cap to plug into the cags harness to keep dirt out after it's been unplugged. A lot of guys just tape it with electrical tape and save the expense. If you change your prom chip out to a custom or after market chip the cags will be programed out of it. Allowing you leave it plugged in.
The switch and wire harness for the reverse lights are forward and above the CAGS connection on the transmission. It's a completely separate item. It's not very easy to reach, but maybe someone disconnected the wrong or both wiring harnesses.
The reverse gear switch that turns on the backup lights failed on my
'95 after only 10,000 miles.
If you find that the connector is, indeed, plugged in correctly, you
should unplug it and use a meter to see if the switch closes when
the transmission is in reverse. If not, replace the switch. If it does
close, check the feed line to make sure that 12V is present across
the terminals (with ignition on, of course). If not, check for a blown
fuse or other nonsense in the feed line.
