I Have a 1979 C3 running a 1986 L98 TPI engine with aluminum heads, I do not trust the bottom end on the L98. I also have a GM crate engine 10066036 with bad heads, but a good bottom end. Would putting my aluminum heads, TPI fuel system, and computer controlled HEI, on the crate engine work? Will all the bolts and ports line up? I imagine my compression ratio would be a lot higher. Would the cam work? Will my 700R4 bolt to it? Would this setup be good, bad, or ugly? The car will be used as a cruiser.

This seems to be the crate motor I have.

GM Goodwrench 350ci/260HP Engine & Packages

This universal 350ci engine uses a brand new block and can be used as a replacement for most GM vehicles from 1973-85. It produces 260 HP and 350 ft/lbs torque with a 4-bbl carb and headers.

Specifications
4-bolt main with 2-piece rear main seal
Cast iron crankshaft
LT1/LT4 powdered metal connecting rods
Cast pistons (dished)
Hydraulic flat tappet cam (.383''/.401'' and 112° lobe separation)
Cast iron cylinder heads with 76cc chambers
8.5:1 compression ratio
Block is compatible with left or right side oil dipstick (Requires Plug for Unused Side - Plugs are Included)
4-quart oil pan
Timing tabs for a 6-3/4'' or an 8'' balancer
Recommended spark plug: Accel #111-0574-4 or any spark plug with 14mm .460'' reach, 5/8'' hex, tapered seat, projected tip

It will bolt right together. Just need the right flywheel with the shortblock.

Thanks, I was planning to use the starter, and flex plate, that came with the crate engine. Any idea if that will cause me any problem with the 700R4? I have swapped a few 4sp transmissions, This is the first time I have ever had to mess with an auto/torque converter.

In any swap regardless of trans ,the flexplate / flywheel must match the crank style 1 or 2 pce RMS ) being used

Your 86 engine "should" be later model 1 pce RMS ; the crate is is listed as 2 pce RMS.

Just do it. TPI will have enough torque to make it fun to drive and it will be easy on gas.

The two issues:

1. As pointed out you will need a early (2 piece RMS) style flexplate.

2. Your compression ratio is gonna jump going from a 76cc head to the aluminum 58cc. Plan on something like 10.5:1

Personally, I would add a little fatter cam to bleed some of that compression (dynamic) and use a thick head gasket.

You can swap the heads on if you use premium fuel and retard the timing 5 degrees.
