Default stuck at work... help

Drove my 84 into work. It has been carb'd.

about 30 minutes into the drive, the dash wents nuts... segments blinking on and off, all my interior lights turned on, and my radio turned off. I also found my O/D turned on/off with the headlights (but my ECM is pulled so it is purely mechanical. 12v from battery to switch to 1st gear relay to o/d pressure switch)
It drove/ran without a problem. I made it to my spot and shut off the car, looked around under the hood, and tried to restart. Nothing. no lights, buzz, click, etc. not a damn thing.

I have 12.7vdc at the battery, metal is still grounded, no blown fuses.

It has to be a ground somehwere.

The only other thing I could think would be alternator, but then your battery would be drained and the engine would've slowly died from power loss.

Sounds like a loose or corroded battery terminal.

Remove both battery terminals, clean and reconnect. Check large red wire going to the alternator.

So I finally had a second to check out the car, hopped in it, turned the key and it fired right up, like nthing was ever wrong.
I was really foggy this morning... moisture somewhere?

When I started it, it seemed fine, about a minute in, the dash went crazy again. 4 miles from my house, after 20 minutes driving, hit a red light, and it was like someone turned the key. Done. Same thing as before.

1- load test your battery

2- clean all connections

3- start going through the ignition system/ lots could be wrong here

4- load test your alternator with a dvom, connect it to battery, have someone start the car, while it's cranking just before it starts if the meter reads 9 volts or less your battery is bad. If you see more or less than 14.5 volts ( when you start it again ) alternator may be under or overcharging killing your battery.

This is an old symptom found out years ago on this forum....one of those things that don't make any sense yet you can't argue with success.

A coil is cheap, pop it in and see if that doesn't cure your whacky digital cluster.

The coil may fix the dash issue, but how about my no start condition?

got it flat-bedded home late last night.

after the trip to my place on the rig, I opened the door to press the brake and slide it off the flatbed and all my lights worked, I didn't have the key on me, so we back it down, and I got my keys, put it in the ignition and then it all crapped out again.

ignition switch/cylinder as well?

Your symptoms still sound like a bad battery connection.

Did you clean and tighten them, or just test the battery with a volt meter ?
