I have an 85 vette with 500 hp 460 torque 383 stroker. beefed up 700r4 and 2400 stall speed. yesterday for first time took it out on deserted hwy for run. rolled out to 2000 rpm and nailed it, then shifting to second the car made a radical left turn, got out of gas went back to right then left again til finally under control. running bfg hp tires. my thoughts, rear wing for downforce ,street radil drag tires, letting tranny shift on its own. would appreciate any SERIOUS ideas

You're kidding... right? Any passenger car with 500 hp without traction control WILL BREAK loose if you punch it... pushing it beyond your own driving abilities. (Even my stock 93/300 hp will break loose.) Did you beef up the original suspension and brakes, too?
You need to learn to handle the beast... and its personalities and quirks. You found its overwhelming HP (strengths) and the tires (weakness).
A recommendation ... driver's school - need to refamiliarize yourself with the improved horsepower.
A road or highway will have a crown on it. If you lose traction, the rear goes right and the car goes left. Try it at a strip with sticky tires. A rear wing won't help until you are 100mph+, not in 1st gear.
On mine when I had the 350 hotcam motor making 362 rwhp, when shifting from first to second, it would fishtail very easy. With ET Streets at the track, a short burnout, and even standing on the brake to bring rpm's up, I couldnt break it loose on launch.
As rklessdriver said, get a good set of drag radials and it will be a world of difference.
BTW what are the mods you have done to get that kind of power?

On the street , my 410 rwhp 383 A4 will kick the rear on the 1-2 shift @ WOT ( have a very firm shift kit ) on ET streets.Just need to be prepared for it
But doesn't do it at the strip
Find your self a set of beam plates. That will/should cure the kick out to the right when shifting from first to second. At 400 rwhp I usually got traction toward the end of second gear. At 600 rwhp I stopped going to the strip. Don't expect much from '"STICKY TIRES". And avoid advise from those making less than 500rwhp. They simply don't understand because they have never been there. Enjoy and stay alive!
