Default The Beast Roars! Engine rebuild completed.....

Hi Guys,

After 4 months waiting for the engine (which I was told would be ready in 2 weeks!), then 2 months waiting for a new throttle body, then a month of furious activity, here's what she looks like:

...as you can see, I've got some tidying up to do - sheathing the injector loom and general dress up work, but she's together, AND SHE STARTED FIRST FLICK    (Well, second flick actually, 'cause I forgot the MAF first time round - they don't run well without the MAF, do they?

I got some video of the first start up, and by Christ she's loud, even with the exhausts shut right down!. It's a Real Media file of 1.48 Mb, and you can see it here http://www.kiss400.com/THEBEAST/Engi...ebeastroars.rm

I'm still running with the old stock injectors, as it finally dawned on me that trying to run 36# injectors without computer changes was just plain silly! :bb The future holds an ECM upgrade, because I couldn't be bothered with EPROM burners!

I'd like to thank everyone on this forum who has given me advice over the last few months - you guys are the tops! :flag

Cheers, Steve

Just got her reinsured for the road. Full risk cover with all mods declared, together with estimated bhp of 550-575......GBP 346 for a year! (one quarter what my 18 year old son pays for legal minimum cover on a bone-stock 1.6 Nissan Primera  )

Finally, I've found an advantage to being 42 years old!

Now, to complete the break-in then get her on the dyno for some proper set up work.

Well, we call them dynos. They're actually rolls of old conveyor belt strung around rollers, with poor people employed to grip the rollers, and a Doctor on hand to analyse the severity of the friction burns on the palms of their hands. They then use a simple look up table to translate to rwhp.

Specially trained sniffer dogs are used to guage O2 content of exhaust. The rollers have to be widened to given them some way of trotting alongside the exhaust, hence the term wideband O2.

Really, I'm astonished you didn't know this already :D

I think you're going to very quickly learn just how bad the 85 ECM is. The MAF is going to hit a brick wall and cause serious tuning problems. The horribly underpowered 85 ECM is only going to make matters worse. With the kind of power that the blower is going to be making, you should strongly consider upgrading to either a 90-91 speed density computer, or an aftermarket DFI.

Good points Jim, and something I realised a few weeks ago - mainly after reading this forum and the ECM/PCM one too.

I considered and rejected Haltech and Accel DFI, in favour of a Speed-Pro F.A.S.T. with wideband O2 (who let the dogs out  ) - but it's two grand I ain't got at the moment!

A couple of people over on ECM/PCM suggested I'd be better with a '749 - they have said I will have driveability problems using a Speed Pro. I just seem to keep on getting conflicting advice! Hopefully, by the time I can afford to upgrade the computer, I'll have it all figured out. Clearly, speed-density is the way to go with this build.

The ECM thread is http://forums.corvetteforum.com/zerothread?id=316791

Cheers, Steve

Great Going! Keep us all posted on the track times, etc!

I too think your going to be greatly hindered by the fact that the MAF and 85 ECM can not handle the system.

I am currently considering a swap to MAP. Maybe this winter!

Jesse
