Default LT1 Intake on L98 Engine In Progress... sorta

Progress is not the best word actually.

First off, the bolt holes were close to being right, but they weren't correct by any means. Distributor clearance was close, but not close enough, angles where the bolts bolt down were all whacky none even had a flat plane to seat good. But after working on it all day yesterday, I have it bolted on and sitting pretty.

Distributor down, fuel rails down, whoop! what's this, the schrade valve is in the way of the distributor. Quick check to the LT1intake website, and updated pics show a pretty good shot of rails that look like the schrade valve has been moved and brazed on to fit, but no mention of that anywhere. I guess I'll go back to that later. Throttle body ready, whoop! don't think so. Front coolant lines touch the radius of the mechanism. Quick visit to website again, his 58mm has a small pull type mechanism that is much different than stock or any of the aftermarket throttle bodies that I have seen. I am going to have to buy one of those dorky throttle body spacers from Mid America now...

This thing better run good when I get done. All in all, I am not very pleased with the amount of work on his part that has gone into this intake. I expected to be able to bolt this thing on and go from there. I know that the rail lines and throttle body are my concern and not his, but having to work on the intake all day to get it to bolt down really put a bad taste in my mouth. I'll have pictures later, but I'll need somebody to post them for me.

I wanted to do this mod too. I was hoping it would bolt right on. How did you get the bolt holes to line up? Did you use fuel rails for a LT1 (93 and later)? If you need someone to post pics you can send them to me (FD2BLAK@aol.com).

There is actually a guy on the internet that sells a conversion to put LT1 injection on older design SBC's.

It's around $400-$600 if my memory seves me correctly.

Ummmm....Slammed GT and Vettes rule, I'm pretty sure that this IS the intake that he is having the problem with.

If you read his post I think Spedracr93 did get it from LT1intake.com. The extra work on the intake seems to be a little disappointing. I too thought it would bolt right on.

Well I think we all know by now there is no such thing as a true bolt on.

But everything is a bolt on with a grinder, welder and a hammer..... :smash: :D

I was considering buying from them too until I saw the part about not being legal for emissions testing since it eliminates the egr valve.

I know things aren't always 'true bolt-on' but give me a break.
With the amount of work involved might aswell rent out a machine shop and do it yourself... thank god I never even thought about doing this..

Rob, I'll try to send you some pictures next weekend.

I am taking some pictures as I go. I am going to try to find different fittings to replace the ones that go straight up with 90* ones. That might keep me from having to buy the spacer or a different throttle body.

As for the fuel lines, I'm still thinking about that one.

Hmmm.. this would be a cheap way to get a miniram type system. Considering I have a fully assembled LT1 motor sitting in my garage.....hmmmmmm

Good luck let us know how it turns out I might try this mod.

list of true corvette bolt ons.

1. air cleaner
2. spark plug wires
3....................................

 it's just something you get use to, most aftermarket parts don't fit correctly and need some help. a lot of times i think they pay off is worth it. just totally a person to person choice

I wanted to correct my post, John said that he has never changed the fuel lines up before. So I guess the picture I saw, the line just was dirty or rusty in that area.

He has never messed with Corvette fuel lines before, and that must be where the problem lies.

You think that swap sucks, try an LT4 intake on a set of Vortec/fastburn heads. Not a single bolt was close to fitting and the distributor is still leaking. You have to run a small distributor for an easier fit and the TB throttle bracket needs to be cut and the cable needs a condom of some sort over it to protect the driver's side coolant hose from a rubbed hole. An of course here are many more obsticals I am forgetting.
Lotsa GOOD LUCK,
Robert

Well there went my hopes, $400 for a better intake? instead of a $1000 miniram. But then again could i use my L98 throtle body and then could i hook it up to my exsisting air box with out much conversion?

C'mon guys, this isn't what I want to hear. I just sent a LT1 intake to John to get modified. I don't need to hear that it's a nightmare to install :smash:

don't forget the miniram is also a much better finished manifold also, i thought about doing the LT1 swap but by the time it's all said and done a miniram isn't that much more. ah who knows maybe when i get tired of my worked TPI setup i'll get a miniram. however the air velocity is just flying in the stock style TPI setup. makes a wet No2 kit quite safe to use with the air moving so fast.
