Default ticking on acceleration

Hi guys. I tried this in the general discussion site but didnt get to many responces so here goes: Ive driven my 95 for 2 years now and it seems to run just fine except for one issue. Im not sure if its a problem or not but when shes on the road doing 30,40,or 50 and I accelerate, I get a ticking sound from the engine. once I let off the pedel and just cruze along the ticking sound stops. If I rev it in my garage I cant get it to do it. It will only occur if I accelerate while going down the road. I always assumed that it was the fuel injectors getting louder due to more gas being put out but want some other opinions. Yes, I always run 91 octane. thanks in advance !

I have hear exhaust leaks between the manifold and the head sound a lot like a lifter tick, and as you describe, you only hear the leak under heavy load or accleration. I doubt you could hear an injector, especially from the driver's seat. Besides, other than the fuel pressure increasing 5 pounds or so, there is not much going on under acceleration that would cause an injector to get louder.

Could be a lifter as well. You proably are already, but do you run 5w30 or 10w30 oil? Synthetic is probably a better choice but not necessary. Look at the oil pressure guage also when under acceleration and make sure it raises up.

You can look for the exhaust leak by looking for soot around the exhaust manifold and head. If there isn't any soot present you most likely don't have an exhaust leak.

One other thing I would try would be to put some octane boost in the next fuel fill up you do and see what happens. 91 Octane today doesn't exactly have the same btu's as 1995 91 octane did. 1995 Octane had a higher btu rating and was better than gas of today that has higher ethanol content.

On the flip side, ethanol has inherently higher knock-resistance than gasoline.

I actually get the same noise in my LT4, and it's been there since I bought the car. The dealer (also a Corvette specialist shop whom I trust) didn't think anything of it when I mentioned it. It's probably just the lifters, our '03 5.7L Hemi RAM 1500 makes a similar sound and has run continuously as a daily driver since it was bought new 2002 without a single issue whatsoever.

I vote manifold exhaust leak. May go away with the simple tightening of the manifold bolts.

Exhaust leak! Check the manifolds and connections and EGR valve.

Lifters dont' stop ticking when the gas pedal is lifted. As I mentioned on your other post, it most likely is an exhaust manifold leak or detonation.

Sometimes these bolts come out (after at least two years, I wouldn't be surprised if you're missing one or two.....) or they could just be loose.

If some are just loose, you can check by gently tightning the manifold bolts with a wrench.

If some are missing.......then you'll need to make a trip to a dealer's parts department or to AutoZone.....

I have one that insists on becoming loose every now and then. Its in a really tight spot so I can't really get to it to tighten it down like I want, but they do come loose.

And if the tick is coming from a loose manifold bolt, you may have ripped through the manifold gasket.

I vote exhaust leak as well. I have the same issue. Quiet except under heavy acceleration.

For those of you with manifold bolts that keep coming loose, put a lock washer under the bolthead.
