One is the middle bellhousing bolt on the driver's side. Leave that off and the dash goes dark.

I will check that area . any other area i sure know about.

My dash you can see the numbers and lines, but very light and some time is compleately off.

also the display some times show one section and the other not. but is not like the part is damege because some time you can see that very same section light up in diferent ocacion. and the one that was working this time is off.

They didn't use the bellhousing bolt for ground in 1986. The ground is on the side of the block above the oil filter. I made a web site to show the grounds from my '86 shop manual:

I dont have the G101 ground. . may be is conected with the other grounds next to the oil filter.

look like the ground never been there since I got the car...... 3 month ago I buy a good used lcd dash on ebay I install and work fine at firt. since the original one was totaly fried.

but now I have this issue. very low light. the lcd marks some times show parts some times show other parts.

I think is not a ground problem. also dont know if this is important, but the cortesy light on the food area stop working

ok today I take out the lcd dash.

I think the problem are the cristals. is a black ink in some of the part of the cristals, and some of the case.

look like the liquid inside the cirstal is coming out.

I clean the cristal and reasembly the unit. and is not good.

I have some pictures and video to show

here you can see, the area where the most commun problem happed. and look ok.

[IMG][/IMG]

here is the back part. also look good
[IMG][/IMG]

here you can see the cotton is dirty after cleaning the cristal with some kind of ink

[IMG][/IMG]

here you can see at the bottom of the case a bright area. like wet look. that is also the ink on the case

[IMG][/IMG]

my hand dirty from that very same ink
[IMG][/IMG]

the cristal contact they all look in a very good condition

ATTENTION ,young padawan!when you put together LCD's,on the plastic case there are some little tabs, you have to line up well lcd's becouse if they come out over tabs during re-assembly you can crash them tightening the bolts!

BTW this is an 84 digital dash, you can see a different style in graphics

My 85 digidash normaly goes off during summer, then infall when weather becomes colder it live again.I do resold critical point on two boards, put a new soldered wiring like Batee tutorial shows, cleaned up all parts, but again next summer it goes off.I think metal dilatation is the key, probably the ground becomes loose and has intermittent contact...

i remember in Batee tutorial talking about the little supply board, the little board connected to the main board with a ribbon cable.there is a big yellow/orange capacitor they say it's critical,it is so big it is tied too ,vibration make soldering broken...

Do you try to put new grounds from connector grounds D1 D3 B1 to the metal frame rod under the cluster near door hinge?you can source a good ground from there,no more worry about bad grounds.Even tach filter is critical it's located behind the engine and connected to tach output from distributor

now that you mention I put the tach filter bolt to one of the intake runners some time ago. maybe that is not a good ground. and just about that time frame the dash star acting strange.
