Default Idling rough / running rich????

Car smells like it is running rich and it seems to be having trouble idling nice and smooth. Idle bounces back and forth between 630 - 720 and never seems to smooth out. What could be causing this? Could this be the O2 sensor? I also noticed that the coolant temp is not getting above 170 degrees. My thought was to put a new thermostat in, but does it matter what temp thermostat...185 or 195?

Also, what kind of job is replacing the valve cover gaskets on an 85?
While I have the covers off, I would like to paint them due to them peeling a bit. Any recommendations on a good paint that will withstand the heat or will the high temp paint from the parts store work.

Thanks in advance!!!

Hi, need more information. When's the last time you gave her a tune up? (plugs, wires, distributor cap and rotor) It may also be the Idle Air Control Valve? Here's the link to them. It's a well spent $160 if you have the cash!

I've only owned the car for a couple of weeks now, but the PO said that it had complete tune up 6 months ago and the wires and distributor cap appear to be pretty new. I took it on a 200 mile trip this past weekend and the temp never passed 170f. It just seems like it is trying to compensate for something??????? Runs pretty good otherwise. Not sure what type of gas milage I should be expecting, but it got around 20 this weekend. Thats counting a few burn outs and running the car good.

Unplug your MAF and see if it runs better. I've been chasing these symptoms for about a month. Here's my thread:

The previous owner may have installed a 160 thermostat. In cool weather that would explain the lower than normal temperature. He may also have installed an aftermarket switch to turn the radiator fan on sooner. See if you can determine the temperature the fan comes on and shuts off.

The O2 sensor could produce the symptoms you describe. Have you checked for stored codes?

Valve cover gaskets are straight forward. I use the inexpensive cork gaskets from Fel Pro. I attach the gasket to the valve cover with a thin coat of Gray RTV.
