Default 88 Questions

Hello,

I am new to this forum and don't know a whole lot about this engine. I have an 88 corvette engine sitting in a Camaro and I would like to know more about it. It has an edlebrock 600 performer carb and edlebrock intake with a tremec 5spd. I would like to ask a few questions.

1) Is a lifter noise common/are the components for the top half of the engine adjustable? If so is the valve chatter just an adjustable valve fix?

2) What is the engine from this year actually called and what is the HP of it? I've tried looking on many sites and come up with Ls1, Lt8, L98 and many others for the 1988 engine.

3) Does anyone have the ratios and measurements for this engine? I am looking to put on roller rockers and new lifters if that's where the valve chatter is coming from and could use the assist.

4) Also on a strong engine like a chevy 350 if I were to rebuild the top half of the engine with performance parts does anyone think those parts may push the bottom half of the engine too hard?

Thanks

1) Lifter noise is not common on any engine. Rocker arm adjustments are always required for proper valve train operation.

2) The TPI (Tuned Port Injection) engine is RPO code L98.

3) The 88 Corvette L98 has a Bore and Stroke of 4.0 x 3.48 inches with a compression ratio of 9.5:1. 240hp (245hp with 3.07 rear gear ratio) and 345 lb ft. of torque. The 88 Corvette L98 was the first year which had the Modified D-Port Aluminum Heads, casting #10088113.

4) The stock bottom end could support up to about 400hp @ 5500rpm safely. 6000rpm and over is pushing it.

You're correct, The Aluminum Heads came out in Late 86 but, mainly on the Convertible Vettes and then later on all production Vettes.

The 88 Corvette had the Modified D-Port Aluminum Head, casting #10088113.

Hey GKK thanks for the quick answer. I may have asked question 1 incorrectly- is the valve train adjustable on the L98?

Also what are some things I could do to strengthen the bottom components of the engine and increase the red line on an L98?

The stock valve train is only adjustable by the stamped Rocker Arm nut adjustment, (otherwise, no other adjustments).

You can get the Splayed main cap "kit" to convert the 2 bolt main bearing caps to the 4 bolt splayed mains and also, use a Steel Crank Shaft which is stronger than the Cast crank shaft.
