driveline support beam ?

I took the bolts out of my drive line support beam when I pulled the engine from my 92 lt1 and the fsm mentions the use of a sealer on the mating surfaces of the beam and the part that it attaches to. what is the purpose of the sealer ? I never cleaned off any sealer but there was some sort of white hardened putty near the bolt holes.

It's more like epoxy, it increases the clamping area so the pieces are less inclined to move after the bolts are torqued to spec.
