Default Instrument Panel Light Problem--89 Vette

When I turn headlights on at night, the instrument panel lights fade completely out when there is no light in the cab. I can shine a light in the hole at the top left corner of the speedometer and they brighten up. Take away the light and they fade out. When driving where there are street lights, etc., they will come up according to the amount of light coming into the cab. Good thing most my hair is gone because this would have already had me pulling it out. Any clues what is going on with this? HELP!!!!!

Probably the INST LPS 3 amp fuse is blown.

The light sensor will adjust the dash light brightness during the day, at night the light switch adjustment changes the brightness anti clockwise to increase brightness and clockwise to dim the lights.

Check the website below has lots of info how to fix various issues that may arise.

Rotating the light switch works when lights are working. However, when I turn on headlights and there is no light in the cab, nothing has helped keep the panel lights on. I have checked fuses in the fuse panel. Is the INST LPS fuse located in a different place?

Assuming you have a 89.

The Inst lps fuse is in the fuse panel passenger side end of dash.
Bottom row of fuses 3rd from the left.
Stop Haz, Wpr, Inst Lps, Fp

This is the fuse that provides the voltage for backlighting for
the Factory Radio, HVAC control head, PRND indicator, Wiper switch, Tell tale display, Mirror console light. Rotating the
dimmer switch varies the voltage going to this fuse.

If you turn the Park lights on, and the exterior parking lamps work the Inst Lps Fuse is likely blown.

Turn the parking lamps on and with a voltmeter measure the voltage on the Inst Fuse. Should vary as you rotate the dimmer switch from one extreme to the other.
