I know there is hundreds of posts on exhaust systems and I've done quite a bit of research on nearly all of them, but I just want to see how they will be compared to eachother if I mention all of them in one post. Currently on my '86 Corvette there is Dynomax Super Turbos which to me are too quiet yet drone pretty bad. I would like to keep it under $500 for the system so Corsa is out. The ones I've looked at are the KBD targa style mufflers, the magnaflows w/lt1 tips http://www.parts123.com/parts123/yb....Z5Z5Z50000050F
The Dynomax VT mufflers, some Borla mufflers, OBX exhaust or NXT Step performance exhaust. I read some posts that say the last two don't fit up too well. I'd just like to hear anyone's opinions on any of these or any other ideas for a mild to mid loudness with less drone.
Thanks
I researched for weeks and the more I found the more I wondered what to believe, particularly about drone. I just installed Dynomax VTs on our '84 and I could not be happier with them. Good burble and relative quiet until you get into the throttle, then they liven up but they aren't obnoxious. I find absolutely no drone at any RPM.
Problem with them is that you can't get them with a center inlet/center outlet in 2.25" or 2.5" - just 3". Even so I didn't have to modify the "Y" pipe or the short 90 degree curves which connect the muffler to the "Y". I put the offset to the center of the car and they look just fine. They're stainless but not polished. I bet you could polish them up if you're into that look. I elected to paint mine black and I'm on the hunt for some chrome tips. You'll have to fab up new hangers. I used the stock rubber mounts on the chassis to suspend steel "L" brackets with exhaust hangars welded to the bottom. I went with 3/5" from the "L" to the point where the exhaust bracket is welded on, but you may want to drop slightly lower depending on what tips you decide to run.
I went with the 2.5" versions thinking they would match with the stock exhaust. Turns out 2.25" would have. Either way I had to add some length to move the muffler back a few inches for clearance so I had room for an adapter. Would have been cleaner with the 2.25".
You'll find the best price (and the best service) from Summit racing - about $100 each depending on which ones you go with.
Dynomax has a lifetime warranty against defect so no worries about the spring breaking. They also have a shorter return-it-for-any-reason guarantee so you really can't go wrong.
I read your post earlier today, was one of the reasons I looked back into it I had kinda not been interested in dynomax because of what I have now but those look good and for that price is even more appealing.
I wanted more sound from my LT-4, so I got the muffler eliminators. They are awesome! I kept the rest of the exhaust stock, but I get great volume and sound from the time I crank it, normal cruising and when I add throttle at highway speeds in 6th. I may have gotten some hp out of it also.
I ran mine without mufflers (removed the originals to see what it would sound like when I was considering eliminators) but it was louder than I prefer and I didn't like the tone. It's just a preference thing, but for me that wasn't the sound I was looking for.
The VT mufflers aren't "cheap". They're fully welded heavy-gauge stainless steel and I find the quality, fit, and finish to be very good. If a guy were inclined I'm sure he could polish them, but I don't see the point if preserving the remainder of the stock system.
There are a lot of theories about the solution to drone on the C4 but for every answer there is someone somewhere reporting that it didn't work for them. If the solution were to be found in configuration alone we'd have seen something different in the later C4 configuration right from GM. The VT muffler is a new approach to the problem. I'm pleased to say that it works very well without having to alter the remainder any of the exhaust system upstream and without having to buy something Corvette specific at ridiculous Corvette prices.

I run a Corsa system. But I'm not sure I would make the same decision again. They eliminate drone but are considerably louder under throttle than I would like. At today's prices I'm sure I would go another route.
Drone [ in the L98 at least?? LT1/4] is caused by the two outlets in one muffler.
I plugged one outlet on my 1989 and it stopped. Period. No drone at all. ZIP. NADA.
Those where Boral SS ZR1 clones and have little restriction, so I can't say they work on all mufflers...
It is worthwhile to not that the stock mufflers have one outlet functional.
On the 1984 race car with have a Y pipe 98 Db MORSO racing mufflers exiting through single 2-1/2" to the rear, and No drone
LOUD relatively, but nice compared to the freaking track Miatas!!.
I did the same thing with the factory-style replacement mufflers that were on the car, but then it sounded like a car my mother would drive and I felt some seat-of-the-pants loss in performance. Plenty of guys with single-outlet exhaust and drone problems. Some say this is inherent in the design of the C4. I don't know, but I sure like my VTs.
