Here's a tip that will help you get the distributor dropped in pretty close to where you want it. Before bringing the engine to tdc stick the distributor all the way down in and engage the oil pump drive shaft. Now turn the engine so that your rotor points exactly where you want it to point when you set the distributor. Now you can pull the distributor up and with a dial indicator or your finger find tdc. Since the oil pump drive shaft is lined up what little play you have in it will allow you to drop the distributor in and engage the pump drive shaft with little trouble. Hope this helps. Just my .02

If you get the rotor pointed more or less toward #1 at TDC you can turn the engine over and the distributor will drop into place. Continue turning the engine until you're back at TDC and the rotor should be pointing at #1. If it isn't then you need to pull up the distributor and turn the rotor until it is pointing at #1.

Keep doing this (it should only take one or two tries) until the distributor has dropped into place, the engine is at TDC and the rotor is pointing at #1.

Dont feel bad, when it happened to me I spent two weeks trying to figure out why it wouldn't idle but would turn over.

So you are saying as you open throttle the flaps open and the motor dies from too much air.
I expect the throttle position sensor would then tell the ecm to put more gas into cylinder and it would accelerate. I think you should work on the check engine light and slap a maf on there. Also check vacume lines again especially the brake booster if that is left or cracked your car will be backfiring and sputtering.

It will be hard to hear leaks with the noise created by the open throttle body. The car used a ton of vacume, when I went to pull the line off the cruise control bulb(thats what I call it) the hose wouldn't come off because the vacume was so strong and that was after 2 days of sitting!
