Default EGR/code/headers/deleate

ok folks, I have been told several times that the egr will not throw a code if deleated, been told it will, been told its of just to block off the pipe but leave the switch hooked up and it wont throw the code. (SES) Question, will the real answer please raise your hand. I want to deleate the egr , install new headerswhile its up on those blocks in the pic and b4 it gets to darn cold to lay on the ground., without throwing codes. Whats the correct answer. Thanks guys.

You need to have EGR etc deleted from your tune.

It may or may not , some of us have deleted it without a code coming up.
In theory deleting the EGR should throw a code.

Leaving the switch in place will only prevent a code from the start up self check , not from non operation when EGR is commanded by the ECM
When the ECM operates the EGR valve , it looks for the EGR switch to close by having the hot exh gas flow past it into the engine.

What other mods? If you want to maximize your potential, you need a reprogrammed EPROM. Best is they dyno tune so they can remove the code when they are doing it.

Never set a code with all EGR parts removed. Years went by before I built my motor and had a tune burned with EGR deleted in tune.
Terminated the wires to temp switch and solenoid.

My 91 F body with the Accel Superram and Accel Tri-Y headers did that. Drove to LPE and he tuned it. Still did that once in a while so John tuned it out.

I'm am trying to run long tube headers, true dual exhaust and high flow cats. That's coupled with vortec heads and manifold. No place for me to hook up the EGR, is the reason for the questions. I do NOT want to drive around with a stupid "service engine" light on.

Yes. He tuned my car and signed a copy of his book and somewhere I have a pic of me and him.

On my 87 I deleted the EGR and didn't get a code. I then had a new chip burned because of motor rebuild and I asked for it to be deleted from the program. Still no code.

Sorry I cannot tell you more but for me there wasn't a code. BTW I hate driving around with that orange lite illuminated, that to me screams fix me and I hate driving around with it on especially with the top down so others could see it.

When that lite comes on it is a mad dash to figure it out and resolve it. So far I have successfully defeated the code 32,33,34,36, and 42, but I cannot seem to get rid of the that damn code 12....

Best of luck...

My 85 had the egr code when driving at a steady speed on the highway after around 5 to 10 mins no problem driving around town, i suspect the inlet manifold seals do not have the holes for egr from the heads.
It worked before the 383 was installed, electrical connectors, vacuum hoses and temp sensor all connected.
Anyway i hate the idea of hot dirty exhaust gasses entering the intake manifold.
I ended up getting the Moates Ostrich setup and used that with Tuner Pro Rt, removed the tick for egr diagnostic in the flags menu. (If you need emissions testing you will need to restore things to factory before being tested..
No more EGR codes.

Some say the egr is there to reduce combustion temperatures and that the motor will die without it, I had my egr disconnected for many years without ill effect and my engine is supercharged so plenty of extra heat in the combustion chamber. That is with iron heads that do not dissipate heat as well as the aluminum heads.

See the link below, you can download tunerpro rt and use it for free, however you will need the Ostrich with a chip to make any changes.
Just make sure you get a few chips and copy the factory chip info, as you can easily delete stuff that is critical put that chip somewhere safe for backup.

Did an experiment today: Removed the Oetinger clamp and plugged both ends of the EGR pipe. No code. I was surprised that the EGR/Intake manifold side of the pipe was hot. I assumed the exhaust came from the exhaust manifold and travelled up into the EGR at the intake manifold. Thinking about buying a block off plate but wondering about the EGR tube temp sensor.

It should always throw a code unless you trick the EGR solenoid into thinking its working properly by rewiring, assuming you are at EGR operating conditions (warm engine, part throttle cruising). It mainly works on the highway or some main roads around town where you can get up to speed.

I never rewired my 86 for the header install, merely added a blockoff plate and removed the rest. I cut the wire to the EGR. It would only throw a code on extended highway cruises.

I had it removed in the chip later, which is the ideal way to go with it.

My car came with a custom chip, so it's possible the EGR function was removed. Unless I get headers, I may just keep it hooked up as long as it doesn't leak. Gotta track down an exhaust leak somewhere in the general area and I thought it was the crap Oetinger clamp but no.
