Seeing as how the mufflers on my '85 are getting a little rusty I decided to try a set of muffler eliminators this time. Did I make a mistake? The car is just used for normal driving a few times a year.
I don't think you have made a mistake. I put them on my car last year because my originals rusted out and were rattling. I still have all three cats on the car, and the exhaust noise did not increase by much. At the very worst, you could always opt to put the mufflers back on later.

What year is your Corvette? I think my car only has the one but I may be mistaken, when I put a new starter on it I didn't notice but one.
You will be fine.. I'm running them on my '93. The exhaust flows better on LTx cars because it is dual exhaust from factory. One cat on each bank. It will be louder of course, but not what your thinking. Cats do an excellent job at quieting exhaust
I had them on my 94 when I bought it, they were ok but kinda hard to live with on a long trip, when I bought the car I asked about the Bose system in it, the guy said it was ok "but you wont be able to hear it anyway!" he was right.. I soon stuck some Corsa's on it, best thing I ever done..

Maybe he's talking about the 2 cats and Resonator of the LTx cars?

That's exactly what I'm doing on my '93. I just had Muffler Eliminators put on earlier in the week, and I'm waiting until after I do all of the suspension work, half cage, seats and harness, etc. before I feel like forking out $1200 on just a catback.

There's hardly any drone at all, and cruising on the highway it's really not that bad. It gets kind of annoying once you get right around 1000rpms, but once you get up to about 1500 it's pretty tame. My fiance doesn't mind the drone at all, so I'm pretty happy.
I am about to do something similar for different reasons...
worst case it gets a little resonance at certain speeds..That can get old on long drives. Otherwise, hard acceleration sounds great! Its low enough that you won't attract every cop in town unless you stand in it pretty good..
I am unwilling to invest a ton of money on ANY exhaust right now because the PLAN is to build a motor this winter that will change things....
so,
I found some muff-'liminators that are duels BUT they are wrapped in glass inside and baffled/chambered. This should keep the raspy sound and barking to a minimum. These are at advance auto and Amazon.

The '86-'91 L98 cars have three cats, 2 pre cats and 1 main cat.
I have muffler elims on my '93 also. They can get a bit loud depending on what your doing with the loud pedal. I have no resonator on my car, and I have no drone to speak of, but I am going to put a dual in/out magnaflow muffler in place of x pipe. Should tame it down just the right amount.

I don't mind the car to be a little louder or raspy, I just didn't want the car to sound like it has a straight pipe on it because of the police.
On your 85, if you still have the stock cat in place, the car will be quiet at idle with the eliminators. I have them on my 85 with the Walker rear y-pipe with crossover and no one notices the car at idle. When you get on it tho, it will be a bit loud, but not loud enough for the cops to really notice. The busters on Long Island don't even look at me when I cruise past them.
Check out these links which will show you how it will sound:
Do these eliminate the muff? Cant tell by the picture.
You CAN run them as tips without a muffler since they are packed/wrapped with fiber-glass inside a baffle so they WILL drop the dB somewhat. The Borla muff-'liminator had nothing inside...just a longer version of this tip that completely replaced the muffs.
I'm going to stick the tips on a straight pipe and dump my worn out muffs... I'm positive it won't be any louder than the Borla eliminators that I had and those were tolerable...just a little too much roar on long cruises at hiway speed. It did sound good at WOT.
These tips will be fine for the time being until my new motor is done and a real exhaust can be built for the car. AT $50 ea they beat any other option I've seen.
