Default Exhaust question

I have to remove the exhaust on my 94 6spd to get to a diff leak. Is it easier to remove it where it's attached to the manifold or remove it where it bolts to the cats? Neither look to easy due to rust. Thanks.

If the one slip fit pipe shows lots of rust, you will be better off by unbolting the cats from the manifolds and dropping the entire system. There is a hanger at the front of the resonator, at the diff carrier, and at the back side of each muffler.

You will have to support the exhaust system so that the hangers won't bind.

Funny you should post, I have to do the same thing to replace the O2 sensors. Don't know how anyone can get there without dropping the front of the exhaust system.

You don't have to drop the exhaust to do the o2 sensors. I Changed them recently and I'm no mechanic. Lots of posts on it if you search. Use plenty of PB blaster or equivalent ahead of time if they have been in there a while, that was my problem.

Pete, which tool did you use to remove them? I'm pretty mechanically savvy, have done all of my mechanical work on my Vette and BMW and I just can't seem to fit any tool in there to remove them. I rented a set of O2 sockets but because the exhaust pipes are so wide those wouldn't work, not to mention I can't even fit any type of ratchet up there. Ugh!

The o2 sockets should work, use extensions, your ratchet will be beneath the pipes not above them. If I can find the write up I loosely followed I will forward it to you.

Then the flange which flares of the side of the O2 socket I rented isn't wide enough because it barely extends beyond the diameter of the exhaust pipe. Consequently, I can't insert the ratchet extension into it. I'll locate another one and see if it works.

I think I used the type that looks like a regular deep socket on the pass side with a breaker bar. Drivers side I clamped the heat shield down to expose the nut on the sensor so I could use a regular wrench. I stripped an o2 sensor socket and snapped a flare nut wrench (harbor freight) in half on this side. Use a lot of PB if they are original like mine.
