Default O2 sensors

following some of the posts regarding headers, i've decided to get some from Melrose...looks like a nice system...no air, no cats...son in law says a local vette "guru" can eliminate the o2 sensors...I was going to get new ones with the new exhaust...for a 85 ...anybody know anything about doing this???...

85 only has one o2 sensor. Why not just install a new one with the new headers? They are not much money and the ECM really needs the input to correctly manage fuel delivery.

You only have one and all you need is a heated version so it doesn't drop out of operation when the headers cool off

Depends what engine the "guru " is talking about.
It is common to eliminate the O2 sensors behind the cats on later (OBDII ) engines which have 4 sensors
not the one up front used for your main fuel control.

Having the O2 sensor in place will give you better fuel economy and more horsepower and the engine will run better in general.

Heed vetteoz's advice and make sure you get a heated O2 sensor. This is not the stock configuration, so you'll have to add some wiring and a relay to put power on the O2 sensor when the ignition is turned on.

Check www.casperelectronics.com for a heated O2 kit. It's pretty simple to install. Part# 103025

You only need a heated for long tubes. Shorties are okay. In long tubes the o2 won't stay hot enough at idle to stay in closed loop. Using the heated version eliminates this problem.

There's only one sensor and it is on the drivers side y pipe. By the way, I tried to get away without a heated sensor on my 85. But I had trouble keeping the ECM in closed loop at idle.

If you are going to use Melrose long tubes they come with an O2 bung in each collector. For switched power for a heated O2 you can tap into the brown wire on the wiper motor...

My headers came the same way. I used the right side for an AFR gauge.

I would see AFR = air fuel ratio, and AFPR = adjustable fuel pressure regulator
