Default 88 C4 Air Conditioning issues

Okay I'm open to all suggestions here ....the air con in the 88 seems so inadequate , fan speed seems good just not pulling the temperature down to a comfortable level even on the coldest setting ??? help our summers just started !!!!

cheers from the land down under Ray ...

I took my 91 Vette to an AC Specialist and the mechanic found a leak in the hoses, a bad compressor and 3 different types of leak additives!

He replaced the Compressor, Accumulator, Hoses, evacuated and recharged the system with R12 and the AC is Cold again!...

I had an 89 Vette that was converted to R134 from the previous owner and it never blew cold enough!...

Keep the R12 whatever you do and you won't regret it!

I am not at work right now but I have made a fixture that allows me to measure the air flow coming out of the center vent (above the radio area) I have recently replaced an evaporator core ( which was covered and leaking) so I have a good baseline on how much air should be coming out of this vent.

The reason I am mentioning it...is that the Corvette I repaired also had a fan that "seemed" to be good also. But when the parts were replaced...the air flow drastically increased...and also the A/C worked better due to the evaporator core was not being covered by leaves, bird feathers, and other "stuff".

Remove you blower motor and you can look inside the housing and actually see eh front face of the evaporator core. You may be good...or it may be filled with decomposed leaf matter and other "stuff".

I agree with the R12 freon also. Use it at all costs.

As far as I know, there's no R12 in Australia; nor can you import it.

Has your Vette been converted to right hand drive? If so, they usually flip the Evaporator Box upside down when it's moved to the left side and that puts the Blower Module on the bottom and nearly inaccessible. If it was converted, check for air around the box where it meets the Firewall.

You should have your operating pressures check. R134 is 32F at 28 psi. Because it becomes a superheated gas after it's boiled, you can actually allow for it to drop to 22 psi which would be 25 degrees without the superheat. Anyway, something around 28 psi is what you want to see on a 70 degree day on a Low Pressure Gage. Have a shop check it out. The tendency is cram too much R134 into an R12 system which gets the pressure too high to make cold air.
