Default L83 1984 Help

I recently bought an 84 Crossfire car, while i normally wouldnt do so, this car is in absolutely immaculate condition inside and out and was so cheap i couldn't turn it down but it burns oil like a 2stroke, throws a CEL constantly and idles near 1100-1300RPM

i cant seem to find any issues with the motor, no vacuum leaks or wiring problems and everything seems fine, any ideas?

Find out what codes are making the cel light up first. Have you done a compression check, is the PCV valve ok?

With 189k on the Vette, I would first check and repair any ALDL codes and then do a Complete engine tune up replacing everything!...

It might just be that the rings are worn out and it's time for a rebuild...

if so, i plan to do a vortec 350 swap as i can get one for under $500 and it would be a decent upgrade to the L83 and still cheaper than a rebuild
would it be possible to retune the ECU to work with the Vortec

You can just throw a carburetor on there!

also since the flash codes confuse the hell out of me, i made a video of them and am uploading it now

The cfi intake won't bolt up to vortec heads.
There's very limited tuning you can do with the stock ecm.
Find out if your engine is healthy, compression test or even better leak down test.
You can port your intake & increase the fuel pressure for noticeable gains.

not really interested in keeping the CFI intake, or the L83 heads
i was just wondering if a TBI Vortec engine could be used instead

Got codes 33 (map sensor)
code 45 rich o2 reading.
Check the vacuum hose to the map sensor, if cracked or broken it'll cause both codes.

Tbi heads suck, the heads to get are the 96 up vortec heads. You could even use a truck style tbi on it, reuse your original wiring harness & ecm. Check out my profile pictures.

The intake ports are higher up on a vortec head, so even if you drilled new holes for your cfi intake to bolt on, the ports won't line up.

i have no interest in keeping the CFI intake and would like to use a regular SBC or Vortec style intake
my concern is about wiring and electronics, primarily if the speedo and tach would work

also the CEL issue was indeed the MAP sensor which had a completely disconnected line under the manifold, and it now idles correctly and has no CEL

Speedo runs directly off of vss, and the tach comes directly off of the distributor. A "regular" sbc intake will not fit the vortec heads, but you CAN buy intakes to fit the vortec heads that will let you use a carb, throttle body, tpi, etc.

No abs on 84. Are you very good with wiring? It would be a fair amount of work, but anything is possible.

i have no issue doing lots of work work and decent with wiring, but short on money or always seem to be

also any idea if the C4s used a single or double DIN headunit if not proprietary form factor, as the one in the 84 was removed

Gm size radios all through the 80's and 90's were between single and double din, I guess you would call it din and a half? Install kits are not expensive for single din radios. I would do LOTS of research before deciding on any kind of swap, it can get pricey quick, from all the unexpected things. ex-x-fire and qws have lots to offer on the subject of 84 swaps.
