if any of you have a service manual, how much PAG oil does a '96 vette a/c system need if it's getting a new compressor and accumulator?
even after a recharge, my high side pressure is only 100psi, low side 50psi, so i think the compressor might be shot. system never blew really cold since i bought the car last year, now it's too hot to ignore...
Was the recharge done correctly? Vacuum pulled, checked for leaks, etc. prior to recharge?
Anyhow, the '96 comes with a Nippondenso 10PA20 compressor, and the system requires 8 oz. of lubricant. I would think that putting about 6 oz. in the compressor and 2 oz. in the accumulator would work fine.
nel, the system wasn't emptied, so i used the wrong terminology. the compressor was cycling every 10-15 seconds, in traffic, so i added a can of refrigerant. the cycling stopped, but the system still didn't blow very cold. i didn't hook up the gauges until i got to that point.
thanks for the numbers!
o'reillys has the compressor for $253, autozone for $299. can it be found for less?
since the high pressure port is after the condenser, those pressure readings could also mean partial blockage in the condenser, correct?
With those pressures, looks like a low side restriction, my guess would be the accumulator. Of course if you're replacing the compressor, you should replace the accumulator too. Also, blow compressed air through everything and replace the orifice too. If the accumulator took a dump, there may be pieces of it everywhere.
blue88, my '96 uses R-134a. both fittings are on the passenger side, near the upper control arm mounts. so, i can't answer your question about your '88, other than to say it's typical for the low side port to be on the accumulator. (and the low side is where you fill from.)
changing the accumulator will not help your problem (my guess) btw, there are no parts in the accumulator to fail. with a 50 psi low side and 100 high it sounds like your suction valve has failed (partically) allowing some gas to pass back through. if so it is time for a new compressor.
thanks, rich. my hope is that the accumulator is somehow clogged. of course, what clogs it is usually pieces from the compressor internals... but it's worth a try.
the car had 23k miles on it when i bought it. it cools the same now as it did then. so if it's the compressor, it's certainly not a durable unit...
if your compressor were working properly and you had a plug some where in the low side , your low side psi would be around 0psi. my first guess would have been low on charge, but if you had 50psi on the low side and only 100psi on the high side (while the compressor was running) then your compressor is just not compressing :) good luck
