Default LT1 Powermaster Starters

Looking at Powermaster starters, it appears I have 3 choices for my stock 92:

9100 (PowerMax) - 170 ft-lb up to 11:1 compression
9202 "Original Look"
9502 (XS) - 200 ft-lb up to 18:1 comp

The 9502 is recommended all over the forum, and I have had a powermaster 9509 (IIRC) in my c5 for a few years. Anyone have any experience with the 9100 or 9202? I'm ready to go for the 9502 XS, but it's obviously overkill for a stock LT1 with no planned mods is why I'm asking.

Thanks!

If you still have your original Nippondenso I'd just freshen it up and be done with it. There is very little that usually requires service and any "mom and pop" electrical shop in the area will have the parts on their shelves. The 'denso is used on so many products. Now if you've already got someone's reman then it's an entirely different story. Do you actually have issues?

Yeah, no crank no click when warm. Even if the car has sat overnight if it's warm outside same symptom. It will roll start every time. I don't know if there's an auto electrical shop in my area (western NC) but I'll see what I can find.

Check all of the wiring and if that checks fine then it's likely only the contacts in the starter and everyone uses very similar ones that will work. The imports Toyota etc will have them on the shelf. You likely only need the contacts and the plunger. Usually it's a kit for $20 - $30 with gasket and maybe even brushes and holder.

Thanks for link. If I'm gonna have it rebuilt I'd want a full rebuild-AFAIK it's the original with 130k+ on it.

Also would still like feedback on the different Powermaster models just for my curiosity...

I have the Powermaster 9502 on my 92 and its a top quality part. Its been on the car for little over 2yrs now. 480RWHp 383, 11.7 compression with 230lbs cranking compression. Starts it every time hot or cold - no problem.

I ate a few stock starters (still have one in the garage with a cracked nose) and then had hot start problems with a less expensive but still pretty expensive Powermaster 9600....

Last year when we swapped the 383 LT4 I built for "blackharleyman" into his new 96 Grand Sport Vert, I got him to buy a Powermaster 9502.

If you want the best I highly recomend you buy the 9502.
