hahaha glass art, I like that! I pity that poor rx7 though :lol;
I bet a cam and convertor will make that thing feel like a totally different animal.
His Rx-7 woudn't be down all the time if he stopped trying to keep up with the mods on my vette haha. He swapped in a 13b turbo last year and put a whole 3 miles on it before it popped an apex seal and ran apex seal chuncks around his #1 rotor housing, completely destorying it.
Yeah the 292h cam I put in is a fairly aggressive cam, matching that with a 3000rpm stall converter should make it a pretty mean street car. Not to mention that my old torque converter was stalling way too early, sometimes even below 800rpm. At stoplights I would sometimes find myself with both feet on the brakes trying to keep the car from creeping forward.
Thats gotta be your next mod. Id try a 4.11 with that converter it will wake it up and help it pull the rpm it needs to.
I haven't verified the actual ratio, but if its still stock its the 3.07. If (when is more realistic) I blow up the diff I will swap into a higher ratio then. I give it a year...
When you switch youll hate yourself for driving it 1 day with the 3.07, it will be that big a difference in how it pulls.
Oh Yeah 3.07 to 4.11 is a huge difference in ratio. However I don't want the vette sitting in my garage taken appart during the short amount of time I can actually drive it before winter strikes again. So a new rear diff could very well happen next winter, but for the time being I just want to get this round of mods done so I can get it on the road again.
Got more done yesterday, got most of the accessory drive installed and then put the headers on. Funny thing is, all of this is going back together way easier than it came apart.
Well, the engine has been running for a few days now. Cam break in is done and the engine sounds amazing! I can't wait to get this thing back on the street and play. However that will have to be put on hold for an issue I ran into. The car doesn't move in any gear... checked the trans fluid again, it was good. Then I checked the trans pump, that was good. So I thought I had gotten a defective torque converter from B&M. I couldn't remember my part number so I was looking it up on the auto part store's website that I bought it from when something caught my attention, they sold me a 30 spline torque converter. As it turns out the parts store that I frequent lists two different spline shaft count torque converters, 27 and 30. I checked other sites and suppliers and the only one listed is a 27. So I went out and counted the splines on my old torque converter... it had 27 splines. So tonight the engine is coming back out and the correct torque converter is on its way. Hopefully I can get it on the road on Saturday. Sunday at the latest.
Got the engine back out of the car last night, only took two and a half hours from full dress to sitting on the engine stand again. Inspected the splines on the trans, no damage was done from the wrong torque converter spinning on them. Just waiting on the correct one to arrive so I can assemble it again. Should be on the road this weekend!
Good news everyone! My vette is on the road! I've put about 80 miles on it so far. I want to put 500 miles on it and change the oil again before really beating on it with the new cam. It's overkill since I did the standard break in that Comp Cams suggests, but I would rather play it on the safe side. Even though I'm keeping it under 4000rpm and not going over half throttle, I can say it is a much different animal.. this thing is MEAN! I do need to do a lot of adjustments on the carb. I'm only pulling 5 inches of vac at idle in gear @700 rpm, which makes the brakes interesting. I need to jet down the primary side and maybe get different power valves and then mess around with idle mixture. Hopefully I can pull more vacuum at idle after adjustments. I knew the 292h was going to be fairly aggressive but holy crap it lopes hard at 700rpm. Cant wait for break in and and carb tuning to get done so I can get this thing on a dyno.
Yes I agree, however it needs to get warm again. Minnesota is yet again in another cold snap and its below freezing again... because of that the vette doesn't like to idle, one of the drawbacks to having an agressive cam teamed with a performance oriented carburetor is that it doesn't like cold. I wont see average temps above freezing until Saturday, maybe Friday if I am lucky.
Try from underneath the car with about 3-4 feet of extensions and a swivel. Might need to put some electrical tape on the swivel to keep it from wobbling too much.
Another tool that might help is a Sidewinder. It's a ratchet wrench that has a special handle on it that you can spin and turn the socket without swinging the wrench. I bought one to use many years back while working on one of my cars that had very limited access to the spark plugs.
Use it like a regular ratchet wrench or use that spinner and it does things I can't with a regular one.
Good to hear the car is driving good! Any additional miles to report on now that I"m sure the cam is broken in?
Ive put about 200 miles on it now. Still being nice until I hit 500 miles and change the oil again. Shouldnt take long considering its a 50 mile round trip for work and its finally nice enough out with no more snow. I put some quiet mufflers on it and installed an electric exhaust cutout that dumps right after the IRS. So now I can drive it to work in the morning without waking everyone up. Then just flip a switch and have almost zero restriction in the exhaust other than my x pipe. Sounds mean with the cutout open too. Since it does dump right after the IRS I do get drone in the car while crusing on the highway, but if I get tired of the loud exhaust and drone I can just flip the switch and have the car be nearly silent. Good times!
Btw here is a pic of the cutout. Yes the exhaust is hanging low in this pic. I wasn't done adjusting everything yet.
Damn, I want to hear what you think after you finally open it up! lol
I will admit that yesterday on my way home from easter festivities, my right foot got happy and opened up the throttle more than I had planned. Accidentally took it up to 5000rpm too and it still had me pinned in the seat, then I shifted and the tires broke loose. Damn my right foot...
Once the break in is done I will be shifting the car between 6500 - 7000 RPM when I "give it the beans" as Jeremy Clarkson would say. With my mods I should make power until right around then.
