pinion seal

Default pinion seal

Is a pinion seal a big job on a C4? Can the average guy do it? thanks

..... The re-torque of the pinion nut is critical for the life expectancy of the pinion bearings ... that said , if the average guy thinks its worth his effort , then , yes he can do it ... the hard part of the job is gaining access to the pinion flange area (exhaust , C-beam) ... Before removing the pinion nut I usually mark it and the flange with a cut-off wheel on a dremel and carefully return the pinion nut to its original position (make a sharpie mark on the outside of the socket) ........ But once you've removed the obstacles , it doesn't take that much more effort to drop the diff out of the car and take it to a gear shop to get all the seals replaced and get the guts inspected , cleaned , and re-filled with fresh oil ..........

Pull the differential and do it RIGHT...doing it in the car...is your choice...so if you damage something due to getting the nut not correct again...you MIGHT wish you spent the time the FIRST time doing ti the right way.
