make sure you get it beefed up by someone that really knows trannies. Don't just go stock, especially if you are gonna start modding. It will be a short life if you do.
Last week I had mine rebuilt by Grant Transmissions in CT. I don't think he used realy heavy duty components as we discussed my needs and I told him I was now at about 300hp and would go to 350-375hp eventually.
I had a TransGo shift kit installed, the shift points raised and a 2,000rpm TC installed.
The result was a very crisp shift (chirps the tires easily on 1-2 shift) and a gain of 0.3sec off my ET at the strip. Also my short time came down nearly 0.1sec.
Personally, I don't like the 9 clutch 2-3 pack. Everything is thinner, and thus more susceptible to damage from heat. I'd go with a trans-go kit as well.
Mark, I had an oil leak at the rear main seal that would have cost over $500 to fix (local Chevy dealer). Also I wanted a shift kit and raised shift points so I decided to have a good tranny shop do the total job. Vic'89 mentioned a the shop (Grant Transmissions) in CT that had done work for JD 383.
During inspection Grant found clutch flakes in the filter and, with other symptoms suggested a rebuild. Since part of the rebuild cost was dropping the tranny, it offset the cost of the rear main seal install, so I went ahead with it.
The higher stall TC was a last minute decision based on a conversation with a Forum member who was getting very good short times from his '85 Vette with a 2,000rpm stock TC on street tires.
Bottom line I paid about $500/0.1sec gain and got my A4 with over 110,000miles on the clock rebuilt along with a major oil leak fixed. Not a bad deal indeed.
My best time Sat. during the CC eliminations was 13.21sec at 102.4mph; that was in high 70s weather with a 29.88 baro lanching from about 1,100rpm with a weight of 3350lbs.
