How much for new ABS module?
Mechanic just looked at my ABS problem that I've been having for second time. First time I took it to him, he read the codes which just pointed to the wheels that were throwing them. He cleaned the sensors and checked the resistance...all good there. Problem still happening and now gets a code of 71?? Thinks it is an electrical problem. He's not coming right out to say that the ABS module needs replaced, but if it does, he's telling me that we'd be looking at about $800-$1000.00 for that. The only good side to this (hard to believe there is one) is that this happened under the dealers warranty which will pay half the labor and parts cost. Anyone else had these problems? What did you end up replacing and how much did it soak you? This just makes me :U

I had a simialr problem and 3 different dealers wanted to replce the controller. No one wanted to guarantee it would fix the problem. So I bought a GM ABS test tool for 86-89s. I found the problem to be due to a relay. This is something no one ever mentioned.
There are 2 different ABS controllers, but the relays for the 86 - 91 are the same. One of the original relay designs has been replaced with a new design. Since Jeff Koop (18carfan) can get you all 3 relays for right at $100, I'd replace relays first. I've listed the order of replacement I'd use in parens below (*). Note that the main ABS controller listed last can often be had used from a junkyard for under $300. Generally they don't go bad so I'd seriously consider that option before spending $800 on a "guess".
