Default C4 ignition problem

I have a 96 C4 collectors edition with LT 4, 6 speed manual
The key just turns inside cylinder, although sometimes it will turn power on yet not start and if it does turn power on will not turn power off. I have had battery disconnected. Any suggestion besides changing lock cylinder. Can I use any cylinder for my application or am I limited because of the resistor key? Will I have to reprogram for different key? Any links to any tips for R&R; my concern is if I have to remove steering wheel since it has the airbag. Thanks for the help

Removing the wheel is easy, pull the fuse unhook the battery and let it sit for 10-15 take out the 2 fasteners on backside of wheel and pull off a/b with you off to the side.

Just did a lock cylinder not too long ago and I had a similar problem. You will need to get a wheel puller and a lock plate tool which you can rent free from AZ. There are some threads on it which I will add when I find them again so check back. You don’t need to re-program anything but you will need to get new pellet keys cut for the blanks that come with the new cylinder.

I got my cylinder from EBay for under $30.

Make sure you get a cylinder for a manual shift and not automatic. Not a bad job but there are layers of things to take off and don’t plan doing it fast the first time. I took my nut off the steering wheel with a impact wrench with just one or two quick pops. Be careful of all the switches and parts you take out so it will not cost you anymore.

On the other hand, are you sure the lock cylinder is bad and the linkage down to the ignition switch on the lower column is not disconnected or loose.
