Default shift **** help

I have to fix the shifter boot on my 96 6 speed. I have found all of the screws to remove the center console, but I can't figure out how to remove the shifter ****. I could use some advice on this, and any help would be greatly appreciated.

Carefully pry up and remove the plastic plate with the shift pattern on it on the top of the shift ****. You'll then find a small wedge driven into a slot at the top of the shifter - you'll need to rock the wedge out of the slot, then you'll be able to unscrew the ****. I wound up destroying the wedge when I did this, but it was no biggie, the **** screwed back on tight enough without it.

This single post will show you what to expect and how some remove the wedge. It's not how I did it and if you search you'll find many various thoughts.

I drill a small hole (1/8") and use a small dent/seal puller for a very quick and damage free removal. This is NOT the one I have but this would do well and you would find many uses for it. I don't know of an easier method. There are some "horror stories" for sure if it's really wedged in tightly.

The type of puller I use:
